Trunk wiring design flaw?

When I bought my car I noticed that the trunk wiring was visible where the rear window meets the trunk. I soon realized that it had spent the past many years getting crimped in the topside seal around the trunk lid. Since I want it tucked inside, closing the trunk lid is now a two-hand operation, where I manually tuck the wiring under the lip of the trunk as I close the lid. See attached pics.

Is this a frequent problem or design flaw? There seems to be no other way to get this wiring to tuck under when closing the trunk.

Your car is different than the two M139s I currently have in the shop....These don`t have that clip and the wiring simply folds over on itself when closing....Jason

*sigh*, my car with its 20 dealer recall items in the past seems to have been "the one that got away" in terms of quality control or something. So many things had to be fixed or updated in its first few years.

Interesting, mine does have the clip and I have the same problem – it must've been going on for a while since there were two spots where the wire harness had caused the rubber strip on the rear window to separate from the glass (looks like your strip is in the process of separating also).

Fortunately, it's a fairly simple repair: on Monday, Roberto is going to fit a spring to the wiring harness which will make it bend properly again. For the rubber strip, he sent me to his glass guy (David at Mex Auto Glass), who got it looking essentially as good as new in about 10 minutes

You mean Roberto Roselli? I will ask him to fit the spring when I take it for service this Fall. Thanks for letting me know.

That rubber seal *was* separated on my car due to years of crimping the wires, but since I never allow it to do that it has relaxed back to something like its original shape over time.

I have now seen a couple cars with the same problem, along with a small crack in the glass directly above the wire. Seems that some actually get crimped enough to cause stress in that area, likely caused from the wire occasionally getting stuck in between the trunk lid and the rear wind screen. I specifically know of one car (early 2005 btw VIN 015225) with a crack that has creeped quite a bit over the past couple years. Those who service these cars have no reason to notice the cracks but if you start looking for them, you'll see just how common it is.

Some dealers are aware of the issue and can adjust the trunk lid in a way that helps guide the wire when closing. My car (early 05 VIN 018323) was one of those cars. I haven't had any problem so far. The trunk lid is very slightly raised (barely noticeable at the body line) at the corners but there are NO leaks whatsoever.
