somewhere in here there is a thread about this. if i remember correctly is has something to do with a ceramic type relay or block that is cracked. dont quote me, im trying to find it for ya.
Mine just did it too on its bi weekly drive! It had no engine light on but it pulled a code. I cleared it and It was fine. These cars dont like the cold.
No codes just the drone of the fans running all the time but the car is running way too cool (1/4 way). May eventually throw a code. If anyone knows where the sensor is, please let me know.
Bee, i just got home where keep records in my pc of everything that us guys are repairing in a folder and i found the one about fans staying on. it paid off in this case. MaseratiNashville put up a thread (OBDII PORT LOCATION). When u get to it scroll down to see what RAMP says cuz he pinpoints the problem. At the bottom of the radiator there is a resistor and the ceramic covering that is decaying. sorry but i had a hard time trying to copy and paste it. Lorenz
Any error with the cooling temperature sensing circuit will result in the Motronic unit defaulting the fans to high speed. It is generally caused by a thermastat running cold. 170 deg rather then the 190 is enough for it to flag an error. Early cars had software problems associated with the comparative sensor after the thermastat, this was a software issue and most cars have been repaired and the sensor after the thermastat should be unplugged and tucked out the way. This was 2002 and possible some very early 2003 cars.
Generally this will cause a check engine light but it does need to occure on two consecutive drives cycles to illuminate the mil.
Best of luck.
This is spot on! My fans were running at high all the time. Pulled codes and found a "Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temp Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)". When I cleared the codes the fans stopped. Let the car idle for a few minutes and they came on low and cycled based on coolant temp.
Ummmmm. Started the car last night and for the first time in 3 days.... No fans. Temp is perfect (just below half way). Now I'm wondering if I have fans at all. THIS CAR IS DRIVING ME CRAZY
Bee, I replaced my sensor and the fans stopped comming on at all. CEL is on but I'm not able to pull codes so I'm taking it to a local shop to see if they can figure it out after the 1st. I'll let you know what they say.
It's baaaack! I can't believe that in almost 2 years this resistor has gone bad again. The resistor doesn't look as bad as the first time, but the coating has deteriorated some.
FWIW, if you need to replace this part it is MUCH easier to get at it from underneath. Lesson learned.
Sorry to belabor the subject, but it's now part number 263140 and looks to be greatly improved (re-ingineered). Scratch that, it looks like a part that should have been made for a Maserati.
I have same problem fans worked non stop for few days and now fan doesn't turn on. Changed resistor(was bad), same, changed temperature sensor in thermostat, fans still don't turn on.
Any suggestions ????Please help
