Tommorow I am picking up my brand new 2011 GrandCabrio Nero Carboni/Cauo
and trading my 911. BlahBlah BLAh, speaking to my brother who told a friend, who told him, that He had a client who had a Porsche and got a Maserati, and returned it and went back to Porsche in 60 days. I dont know what year, when , or what he bought. Any Porsche people please give me input. I am committed to buying the GTC and am so excited. Is this guy envious or am I going to be sad :(

Depending on your driving style it can be a huge upgrade or a huge disappointment. If you are wanting to zip through the mountains at break neck speeds then the Maserati will let you down. The Maserati is roughly 4300 lbs and a loooooooong wheelbase so it won't be as nimble as the Porsche. If you can handle that then you are going to love the Maserati.

I used to have a 997 Turbo Blue exterior on cuoi, with carbon ceramic brakes, it was fully loaded. Traded it in for my first Granturismo...

The fact that after the Granturismo I got the GTS is pretty eloquent of what I think! I used to love Porsche but lately with all their new models they are ruining the brand. Maserati instead is still very exclusive and the car looks amazing. It has 4 real seats and a trunk than can actually fit luggage.

Only nod is that sometimes in the winter I miss the 4x4 and can't drive in the snow!

Just my 2 cents, hope it helps!

I have both...

I have a 2009 997 turbo and a 2009 GTS.
If I had to give up one, I would give up the 911.

Just because when I spend over 100k for a car, I like to think that the car has a level of exclusivity. The Maserati has that exclusivity. That is why I have a hard time buying an R-8 or a Mercedes (500sl) and why I would give up my porsche before I would give up my Maserati. As far as driving experience, I prefer the Maserati. Interior is awesome with lots of room in back seats. And the exhaust is no comparison (GTS wins hands down).

Maserati is my choice.

Which model 911 are you trading? I have a 997 GT2, which I drive 50/50 street/track, and just traded my C63 in for the 09 GT 4.2. As mentioned above, the 997 and the GT are completely different cars. C/w my C63, the GT is slower, heavier, and less nimble, but more comfortable, MUCH better looking, better sounding (though the AMG 63 engines do sound good for a benz), with more back seat room. I didn't need the performance as that's what I have the GT2 for, I wanted a gorgeous, exclusive, grand tourer, which is exactly what I got. :)

I am trading my tricked out 06 997 Cab built to spec, it has tubi headers, exhaust, cf airbox, chip,(full F77 package). However, from the moment i saw the GTC, I wanted it. The backseats of my Porsche are shrinking as my boys get older (11 and 14). While the Porsche is a gocart, the Maser is a work of art. It is beautiful inside and out. I dont track the car, i drive agressively, but safely. I am hoping the Maserati gives me the thrill of the car while being a fun car to drive. The Porsche while fast just does not have the panache of a Maserati. I have had the Mercedes, Beamers and 3 Porsches, but this car is more than the rest. I have had mostly Cabs and that is what I love to drive here in South Florida. Not many choices in wonderful Cabs. I am Just a little nervous as i have never had an exotic car before and was startled by what this guy said to my brother. I am very excited and feel almost a sense of accomplishment on buying the Maserati. Thank you all for your feed back. It is much appreciated, keep it coming :)

You cannot compare the best handling and allrounder car like the PORSCHE is with the italian Donna....
You can race the Porsche on the weekend on the track (what you should!) and after just drive it as normal daily driver. Sure the place is limited...if you need a family car, then you have to do what I did and buy the QP!
The Maserati sounds great...already the name...but is sensitive like a prima donna....handles break....interior get sticky....crazy messages from board computer....this and that....big brake kits that it stops....Problems what I didn't have with my Porsche before.
You must know what you want...for what you want it....and then make the right decission....if you question once your decission (what you already do now) yeah then it seems like you had choosen wrong!
I once had to make the choice between a Porsche turbo and the QP duoselect...if we would not have our new born daughter....sorry but then I would sit in the Porsche! But as I love my family and don't like to drive around alone...I'm now happy with family and the QP...

I agree with the above, no comparison, Maserati is an exotic. However, I will say that porsche is very impressive engineeringly speaking. But, personally, I would never own one. They are technically "perfect" meaning that they perform as you would expect, and on paper, are impressive. But I find them so boring to drive and look at. They lack all the personality, character, passion, and so many other attributes that I look for in cars. Maserati's appeal to me because they are everything I look for in cars, those things are far too many to list, but safe to say, this marque has them all.

I have both 911 and Maserati. Completely different cars. 911 of more of a sports car that is good for twisties and nice weather (mine is a C4S cab), and when i get the itch to drive a 6speed manual. Maserati is a GT car. Much more comfortable (porsche suspension is much stiffer than the GT-S), 4 usable seats, a fantastic engine sound track, and true exclusivity. Porsches are a dime a dozen around me, so I like the fact that i don't see too many maseratis around.

I went from a 997 C2S to the 4.2 GT. Driving wise, I greatly preferred the Porsche. But, both of my kids are still in child seats and I needed some semblance of a trunk. The Maserati looks and sounds way better so the change was worth it to me and I would do it again.

I put less thank 6k miles a year on my daily driver, the Maserati, so having a second toy is a bit ridiculous. However, I do admit that the search for a truer sports car for occasional use has already started because the Maserati lacks the dual character the 911 had.

911 vs. GTS

I agree with almost everything stated here. I owned a 2007 911 Turbo, 6 Speed, and 2008 GT. Here are some of my personal experiences. Again, though, repeating much of what was stated above.

I had my greatest drive from Los Angeles to San Diego one day in the GT. It was my greatest grand touring experience ever. At the time, I also had a 2006 Coupe, and I would take the Coupe out to do canyon runs - very fun. It was much lighter and more nimble than the GT. I also had the 911 Turbo at the time. I had some of my greatest canyon runs in the 911 turbo. When I put that car into "sport" mode, I felt like I was part of the car, that the car was an extension of my body, not like any other car. And the thrust of that car, 0-60 in under 4.0 seconds, was in a different planet compared to the Coupe and GT. (And the 2010 911 Turbo with PDK is in the low 3.0s and Turbo S at like 2.8 or 2.9!) I took the GT out on canyon runs - it was "okay", not at all like the Coupe, and not anywhere near the 911. The GT was just too heavy - I have the same issues with my SL 55 AMG - it's just too heavy and at some point, the laws of physics take over not matter how good the suspension.

I had to give up all three of those cars, and a bunch of others (550 Maranello, 360 Spider, Gallardo, to name a few).

If it means anything, hanging on my wall at work for me to day dream and keep working hard are pictures of the following cars: 911 GT3 in black with grey rims and red calipers, 911 Turbo with PDK in metallic dark blue and red calipers, Gransport in blue and red calipers, and GTS MC Sportline in white with black interior and white stitching and black calipers. If I had the money, I'd get them all! But for now, I can only get one, and it likely will be the Gransport, given my lack of funds and what I can afford right now.

But if you can only have one, then, like one of the persons already said, think long and hard about what you want in a car and what you want to get out of it. Make your decision on which one is going to satisfy the more important aspects of what you want.

Hope this, along with the other posts, helps.

Depends / correct answer

This post was from Doctor Jim and hits the nail on the head.

"I owned both at the same time (an 06 911S and a 05 coupe, both stock). The coupe always had something wrong with it,the 911 did not. The coupe was more ergonomically challenged, had less of an A/C,primitive nav system, lousy sound system and the imminent threat of the F1 pump failing (mine never did). It rode better but at the expense of handling. The 911 was faster by the stopwatch but felt much slower. The 911 was an engineering masterpiece but felt rather boring compared to the coupe. The reaction from the public was awe-struck for the Maser vs no reaction whatsoever for the 911. I miss my Maser every day still but could care less about the 911. Kind of like a couple of women in my past. If you drive the Maser, you will understand."

Maserati Hands Down !

I have picked up my GrandCabrio in Carboni/Cuio with Gloss Black wheels and Yellow Calipers. The GTC has all the options and is simply stunning. I am no longer aprehensive or concerned. The Maserati is AMAZING, it does everything i need it to, it is fast and it is beautiful. I am out of the 911 and am not looking back. I am glad i switched, it is just a great great ride !:cheers:

Ask yourself what you want from the car. Practicality, good looks, back seat , easy winner. Pure joy of being connected with the car, the reward of driving a car fast and driving it well, then choose your weapon carefully.

I have a 2010 911 4 Cab (with the new 345 hp engine) and an 09 Granturismo S with MC shift and I much prefer the GTS. I have tracked both cars, and the GTS is more fun. In fact, I was able to pass both my buddies in 997 4S and S with the Maserati. I also got complements on the sound and look of the car. One commented that it sounded as good as the F430 that was on the track.

The Maserati is a heavy car, so I really had to be hard on the brakes in the corners, but it handled well. That being said, the most impressive cars on the track that day were the Audi V10 R8 and the Lotus Exige. The Lotus seemed to be the best track car, even besting the GT3. I was surprised.

But guess who had the best ride on the way home?

#18 ·
Agree

I think lotus will always be the "track" car, as much as the 997 is a go kart, the Lotus takes it to the fringe. Having said that, i dont track the car, although my Porsche pushed almost 400HP, and was quick. I notice that we arrived last night at a Italian resteraunt (Italian of course for my first dinner with the car), the time it took was the same :). However, my wife loved the drive, she never loved the porsche ride. My 2 boys in the back seat were happy and 2 cars waived at us. Who in life can ask for more? Loving Family, Home, Health, and a Maserati ? Today i will spend the morning figuring out which buttons work, which dont, which mean something and which mean nothing. You dont do that in a Porsche, you KNOW what everything means. The cab has buttons for rear AC :), of course no rear AC. Those italians, funny ..
thank you you everyone for your inputs, i will drive you all crazy ith questions and hope to be part of the board for years to come.

Ah, just like a fine and sophisticated (Italian) woman!

You dont do that in a Porsche, you KNOW what everything means.
Yeah, just like a.....well.....you know. ;)

it is really a wonderful gift to myself.
That's what it's all about. After busting your butt for so long to make it and look after your family, you deserve it! (just did the same, as you might tell) Glad you're in love. Clearly you made the right choice. Enjoy, she's gorgeous! I loooove the interior, too. Just beautiful. May you have may happy miles together. Congratulazione!!

if the weather clears up a little for the pictures, OMg, it is just beautiful. Drove the kids around and opened it up on the hwy. 4 people in the car which i love is just so special. normally we would go out in my wifes car, mercedes 350, nice but of course no P car but certainly no Maserati. I love my car. it is really for me, who was given nothing in life, mom died, dad abandoned us, no inheritance (that really sucks) i made everything myself. it is really a wonderful gift to myself. :)

I pretty much traded in my 997 Turbo for my GranTurismo. Last night went out with another couple in the GT. An hour drive with twistys and open road. the experience was fantastic in the Maser. In the Porsche although I would certainly get to the destination much quicker,... I would not be able to carry 3 adult passengers. Nor would I get the same sound or feeling of opulence. the GT is a special auto experience.

Good for You!

Mitchell, this is so great. I can imagine how much fun you are having. I have an SL 55 AMG and just went on a Sunday drive, playing tag with a Ferrari California among others along PCH nex to the ocean. I can only image how much more fun it would be in the GTC, with my wife beside me, both my kids in the back seat, top down, through the valley on Mullholland drive, and next to the ocean on PCH. I can envision it. And that's what you're experiencing! I can't wait until I can afford to switch out my SL for a Maserati. Stories like yours help give me the drive to make that happen. CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOU. I wish you lived in Los Angeles so we could go on a drive together.

Mike

Mike, Given that you have a Cab, you would LOVE LOVE LOVE the GTC, it is the GT without a Top ! Driving a Cab in South Florida, very similiar to driving on the PCH, We have the weather, the sun, and it so beautiful looking at the stars with heated seats on a cool nite. Trading the Porsche was scary for me as I loved that car, it was built to spec, and was flawless. However, the guys on the board describe the Maserati so perfectly, it is truly elegant, smooth, and rare. The Porsche is a gocart, but as i got older, I didnt need to hit the corners so fast. Although i didnt get what i thought the Porsche was worth (who ever does) I am thrilled with the performance of the Maserati. Yes it has quirks, like the Nav, but other than that, who really cares. Only 75 miles on her, got her with like 35, but already I can tell that it is all that I would want from a car. Driving with the whole family is truly wonderful, it is the first car that I have owned that EVERYONE wants to go in. I hope you get your car soon :)

one more reason

Here's one more reason to go with Maserati over Porsche (although you already have!).

I had my first hotel experience on Friday. I left the car by the door to check in, went to my room, got sidetracked and came back close to an hour later (no valet there, btw). I went to the desk to apologize because I didn't want to be "the jerk with the Maserati who thinks he owns the place". I could barely get my apology out and the guy was virtually begging me to leave it there all night. He said everyone passing by was taking pictures and enjoying it. He insisted that I not park in the parking lot and said that they would keep an eye on it for me. How could I say no?

Hard to imagine the same scenario with a Porsche.

Similar things have happened to me at nice restaurants.
