It is but, it doesn't have a belt and has stout timing chain...So that isn't your issue..Sounds like you have a pulley locked up on the main drive belt...Jason

So the main drive belt would slip,create friction and thus the smell? And the misfire (and then the check engine light)? The misfire occurred about 1.6 miles into the drive; the check engine light (and the piercing alarm sound) about a half-mile farther and from there limping home a total of 3.5 miles for the entire trip.

 

It could..Best thing to do it open the hood and try to figure where the smell is coming from..You didn't describe the smell and then asked about a timing belt..I'm working off your input here..

 

Did you happen to notice the engine temp? If it were the water pump belt...

The smell was like a belt overheating from slippage. I did open the hood after I limped into my garage, but so much of the front of the engine is covered with plastic that it was hard to localize the smell.

During the trip, I watched the temperature gauge after the check engine light came on and the temperature was normal.

Finally, (and maybe importantly) the smell started to occur when I was almost home (about a half-mile away.)

Hi Guys,

A little late in the update but my wife has been ill.

I put a scanner on the car and Codes P0300 (generic misfire) P0302(Cylinder 2 misfire-invalid signal) and P0306(Cylinder 6 misfire) showed.

I'm thinking that the reason the smell came so late in the ride was due to unspent fuel entering the catalytic converter from cylinders 2 and 6, and igniting, and therefore the reason for the smell. So I'll try rplacing the plugs in those cylinders (or swapping them with another cylinders' plugs (as a start) and put the scanner back on.)

 

Ignition coil swap is worth it as well.
