Hello friends,

Since my car is in a better state of health, I’ve been really enjoying the upgrades I’ve made to my 2006 Maserati GranSport.

I know there are only so many things one can do to a normally aspirated 4.2 liter V8.

Since I’ve done the ECU tune and Drive by Wire Enhancement module (doesn’t effect horsepower/torque)…I can really tell a difference on how the engine starts pulling so strongly from 3500 revolutions per minute to redline.

I’m curious if other owners with these modifications notice the same difference or if it’s just my butt dyno psychologically messing with my mind? What are everyone’s experiences with these 2 modifications…mostly the ECU tune?

Kindly,
v/r,
Stephen

ECU Tune - I used to have that on my Coupe CC that I ran frequently on the track. Before we compare notes, it’s important to know which tune you selected, as FD gives you multiple options. I had selected a high octane tune that only used on track with race fuel additives. It made a difference on the track that was clearly evident on my max speeds on the long straightaways. All other parts off the track were harder to measure based on how well I did turn entry/exit, traffic, etc… But on the straight on my usual track I got about a 3-5 mph gain. Not huuuge, but these engines are tuned really well already. Exhaust upgrades to headers, sport cars and X-pipe will unlock even more, and of course open up the sound quite a bit

Hi Mr. Cloutier, sir,

Thank you - I just have whatever it is that Formula Dynamics gave me, they asked for my VIN and joila the module showed up. I always run on 93 octane and I have the Larini decats and rear aftermarket Tubi’s….so that is all I know my friend.

I have the DBW, and FD flashed ECU, (not the module). The tune really seems to like a free flowing exhaust, I've got full Larini from headers to mufflers, no cats, and my car pulls very well at higher RPM.

Have recently added the FD ECM module to my existing FD DBW module setup. Very happy to have done so too. As numerous others have posted over the years I would concur that the DBW module could be considered an essential upgrade. When compared to the factory setup clutch engagement is vastly improved.

I had hesitated with adding the ECM module as I don't track the car and am not exactly a Speedy Gonzales. Whilst no slouch either I like mooching about and prefer a comfortable ride. A 4.2L V8 in factory guise is plenty for the ordinary driving I do. However, I was curious and in the words of the inimitable Diamond Dave Lee Roth "A Lil' Ain't Enough".

Having now racked up quite a few miles with both DBW & ECM installed the combination is intoxicating. Conferring with @DLax69 I understand the correct terminology is "Hauling Ass". :) IMHO, the effect of the ECM is more subtle than the DBW. Which was immediately obvious. I have easy access to 99RON fuel and together with the ECM module there is clearly additional grunt through the rev. range. With a slightly lower exhaust tone, or "grumble", aided by a Larini H Pipe and GS boxes, the setup up is just about perfect for my liking.

A quick shout out to Jeff at FD who, as always, was most helpful. Big thanks to both Dennis and Todd too. The module will be put to good use (y)

I guess the only other observation to make is one numerous others have made previously. Namely the install instructions are not as clear as they perhaps could be. Whilst comprehensive the socket diagrams are, imho, a touch overloaded with unnecessary info. To that end, again as others have previously, producing your own crib sheet can be beneficial. Mine are below and if used must be done so in conjunction with FD's own install sheets.

I’ve got mine sitting next to my car. We pulled them out after a potentiometer failed. I suppose I should plug them back in. You really notice the difference when you’re used to running the ECM and DBW and then take them out!
