The heater cores themselves are very cheap (<$300 IIRC) if you use the Alfa part. The most difficult and expensive part of the job is removal of the original core and reinstall of the dash. With that in mind, here are two thoughts...

1) Get it fixed right away! Leaking cores have caused members to drop really big amounts of cash to fix damage in the past. This isn't an issue that you can let slide.

2) If you are going to go through the trouble of removing the heater core anyway, just drop the couple of hundred bucks and get a new one. Don't bother dumping a cheap fix liquid into your exotic Italian car!

I agree wholeheartedly with Travis. Josh posted last year that he has the entire change KIT for just over $400. Everything you need. Your experiment sounds interesting for some cars, but you really don't want to be replacing your water pump (or worse) to save $450 and zero labor.
IMHO, the kit from Josh is really the only way to go. That price is a bargain.

Would you buy a car knowing someone used that crap to "fix" the heater core? If the answer is "no", then don't do it to your own car (or anyone else's car). If the answer is "yes", then pull the trigger and good luck.

Jerry, I understand cash flow may be a little tight right now but you probably need to get your car to a shop for them to sort it out.

I don't think your heater core is an issue if you are not getting cold air through your HVAC system. If the cold air worked fine but not heat, then the heater core would most likely be the issue.

Have you tried a battery reset? Perhaps that would reset the brake/skyhook lights. My gut feeling is that your gauge cluster is either not connected properly or is on the way out. That would explain the multiple warning lights and intermittent tachometer issue.

Honestly, these things are impossible to diagnose from a distance. Maybe we can refer you to a well respected shop in your area. What part of the country do you live in?
