Hey everyone,

Back on 6/5 I was having some issues with my 04 Cambiocorsa. When driving the coup, it would only go up to second gear and then it automatically go into neutral. It also wouldn't go into reverse any more. I was hoping it was a sensor issue but my mechanic ran the computer diagnosis and no issues came up with sensors. He did further test and said I need new gear box. I posted on these forums and everyone said that it was highly unlikely that it was a gearbox issue. So I had it towed to the dealership for a second opinion. The dealership has ran a bunch of test and were perplexed for a long time. Two weeks ago they said they were going to bring an expert who thought it was a software issue. Today I just got a call and they are saying its not software issue and that I need to get a new power unit. Has anyone dealt with anything like this? I only have 30K+ Miles on the car. Got a new clutch 2 years ago and new F1 pump a year ago (which is the third F1 i've had to get in the last 3 years). Its been over 4 months since I've driven my car :/. Just want to make sure Im making the right decision before pulling the trigger on such an expensive job.

Thanks in advance!

If it were mine I would contact one of the experts that we communicate with on the forum, like Craig Waterman or Jason@Enzo's and see if they would be willing to look at the car.

The shipping charge would certainly be significant, but the potential saving would also if the problem were not that complicated.

From what I have read here and on the other forum, the dealers tend to throw parts at a problem until it goes away, without understanding the underlying cause.

Not sure what you mean by getting a new "power unit." I remember your post before, and I believe I suggested at that time that the transmission computer may need to be replaced. This was necessary to fix my car also. It is definitely possible for a dead transmission control unit to provoke the symptoms you describe, and the dealer would be perplexed because the diagnostic process cannot determine that the actual computer is to blame. It is basically a process of elimination, which they have apparently gone through.

But I don't see why it should be expensive. The computer itself is only $900 or so, and just needs to be set up and plugged in.

symptoms of a failed power unit can be broad, with all of your listed symptoms fitting the realm of possible. i replaced one in the not to distant past, it would fail to engage into gears, 1st 2nd and 3rd would usually work but the rest were unlikely to be engaged. ended up needing a whole power unit after attempting to manually/mechanically realign the shift finger that engages the shift forks. the power unit itself includes all of the components the transaxle carries that convert it from a manual transmission. solenoids, valve body, pump, accumulator, hoses, and all things. issue ended up being in the shifter assembly.

another thing to consider is parts availability. there was likely a time where individual components were able to be ordered, but as it stands now, iirc, several small parts only come as part of the power unit or complete f1 kit.

It would be very helpful if your location was known. A "power unit" in hydraulic terms is the system that makes the hydraulic pressure which is a motor, pump, accumulator, valves....

To say "You need a new power unit" is very broad. What element / component of the system has failed? It can likely be fixed by someone who knows what they are doing. I have a 355 F1 and I'm pretty familiar with that system but not the Maserati although I'm sure they are very similar.

sc00b is rite on. Awhile back Craig and i installed a new actuator on a 05 coupe. Through all our troubleshooting we checked the leakage rates and found that one of the solenoids on the power unit was leaking. Thats why its important to check leakage rates. We were prepared and had spare solenoids from a used power unit and replaced one of the solenoids then all was good. Before all of this we called a dealer and they said the power unit/solenoids were sold all as one.
