So the saga of my gt continues….

it went to the LD about 6 months ago for diag on the no start issue, and eventually returned pretty much the same way- on a tow truck.

LD replaced spark plugs, engine harness, ecu / pcm. Oil change, compression test, miscellaneous other small parts as needed…. But could not get it to run. Said the cats were both bad, there were internal engine problems, and that I should dispose of the car due to cost of further repairs. ( replacement engine and 2 new cats, probable transmission too they said).

the car has 33k on the clock, and is in exceptional condition, so I was hard pressed to believe that so many things could possibly be catastrophically failed

After it was back I attempted to get it started…. cleared all the codes, and turned the key. It actually did start momentarily for a couple of seconds- sputtering and choking, and died, with the exhaust smelling heavily of unburned gasoline / full rich condition… still though. it was a better turnover than before it left.

It also immediately threw a new cam position code bank 1 code, so I unplugged the cam sensor, prayed for some default mapping in the firmware, cleared the new code and vroom - it immediately fired up and ran 🎉🎉🍾

An hour or so later, after checking vitals and temps, etc - it was screaming down the road.

But with the defective cam sensor plugged in the car simply wouldn’t start.
this was replaced and car now runs well enough and starts easily.

(also - I reinstalled The original ECU and the car runs fine on it as well…. So this was a huge waste of money too)

I called the after sales director and let him know that I got the car running and driving less than 2 hours after it made it home, and that I was far less than impressed, especially since I was missing a lot of miscellaneous parts, like the ecu clamp down bracket, there were uninstalled parts and loose and missing fasteners all over the car. etc.

as of now the car runs well, has very good power, and the transmission fault codes cleared at first drive… shifts perfectly.

The issue now is codes.
It will immediately set the CEL on restart after clearing codes-

it sets-

P1014, intake cam and LH main bearing crankshaft correlation (plausibility)

P1084 MASERATI- LH BANK CAMSHAFT POSITION CORRELATION - REVOLUTION SENSOR"A" (BELOW THRESHOLD)

again the car runs well, smooth through the entire powerband with no valve train noise, no noticeable variator noises, nor anything else I can find.

I’m pretty sure I saw a post regarding realignment / parameter setup for the cam sensors and CPS using the SD 2/3/4 - but I can’t seem to find it now.

thanks!

Sry for your dealer problems. Look for an independent shop like Jason’s here on the forum. My experience at the dealer was mostly young techs with little diagnostic ability due to all the BS encountered during the course of day. Little time to become a good diagnostic technician. Too much pressure to get the job done and when there is a problematic vehicle most times Maserati tech help is available but they are mostly young full of book knowledge. I don’t see it getting much better anytime soon.

I’m definitely going to find a good independent shop to deal with the oddball things (generally just the proprietary stuff); I’m completely mind boggled that the dealer has factory support and training, and a slug of engineers on tap and couldn’t even find a dead cam sensor.
They even pulled the starter to look at the reluctor teeth on the flywheel and told me that their tech support wanted it inspected lol.

I don’t mind paying for a repair at all ( I’m in a service business myself) but I feel like they handed my car over to a (bad) lube tech to diag and I took a several thousand dollar hit… for a faulty cam sensor

I’m kinda leaning toward possibly the variator solenoids as the culprit, although there is no noise or other indication that they are bad. Hopefully someone will chime in that’s experienced these causing DTCs

I forgot to mention, my engine code is # 181160; I gather that this engine should be well past the cutoff for significant variator issues, and should have already had the cam cap mods done by the factory.... is this correct?

I spoke to Rich at TEM last week and he said he would be surprised to not find check valved caps in it, but he did say there were a few that he'd seen that "slipped through the cracks too"; also learned he's moving just down the road from my shop, so I'm feeling blessed to have a top gun machinist a block away.
