Hi all,
Newish owner of a 2009 Granturismo S (4.7) in the UK.

Have looked through all previous threads and haven't found anything very similar so hoping someone can help!

Getting some reasonably thick white smoke on startup for about 5 seconds. More than you would expect just because of cold weather and I think it has a slight sweetness to it, inferring some coolant leakage somewhere I assume?

Checked oil both from cap and dip stick and no signs of any milky contamination, looks nice and clean.

Coolant was low when I checked a couple of weeks after owning, quite below min, topped up with almost 1 litre of coolant, and seeing a slow gradual drop over time. No obvious signs of leaking coolant lines after looking under the hood at startup and once warm.

No power loss in car, no fluctuating at idling, temp gauge never over 90. Fan does kick in on engine when stationary when it hasn't been driven hard though.

Background on car servicing which might be relevant - RHS Rocker Cover Head Gasket changed in 2017, Coolant Header Tank changed in 2019.

Would really appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,

CT.

It’s got 65k miles so reasonably high for a Granturismo. Yes it smokes every time from cold as far is can tell - only for a very short time though.
The car doesn’t sit for a long time between drives or starting, only 3 to 5 days on average.
Thanks.

I would probably have a shop look at something like that..The fact it's using coolant and smokes is not great, but these engines don't really have internal issues other than the variators...Jason

Ok thanks for all the thoughts. I’m near London when not in COVID lockdown so have seen there are a few highly recommended independents there that I’ll get in touch with.

Any thoughts on what it could potentially be or does it need to just be looked at properly / pressure tested etc to tell?

Just thought I would update on this thread in case anyone else has this concern in the future. Had it checked over by a specialist, who said it wasn't an excessive amount of smoke and there are no signs of any internal damage or significant leaks. It seems that the coolant loss has settled out a bit - the car was just spitting out what it didn't like and now levels sit just above the "min" mark quite happily. Perhaps the coolant had been flushed and not properly run through on a previous recent service?!

I did as an aside have the gearbox sump gasket changed as there was a small leak and when the gearbox fluid was replaced it was jet black and a tiny bit milky apparently, which could be where a bit of coolant has gone / is going, so will be keeping an eye on it and getting checked at regular intervals.

Had this before. Check the obvious oil level for signs of overfilling. Pull air filter box out, check air filter & condition of throttle body with regards to oil deposits.

Check for vac leaks. I had no codes on one car and it was absolutely smoking its ass off. Ended up Smoke testing the cam covers & also the whole intake system. Found NS cam cover to be folded in on one corner!New gasket and she was good to go!
