I crawled under our 2013 convertible yesterday, pulled the exhaust valve vacuum lines and used vacuum line end caps on the lines and valves. I started the car and the valves stay closed. I'd like them to remain open...what am I doing wrong?

You did it all correctly. the valves are open by default, and unless they are stuck closed... you should be good to go. there is a leaver that you should be able to move on the valves to see if there is anything stuck. Not sure about a 13 (I have a 16) the easiest way to test this is to put it in manual mode sport and see if the tone changes. Manual mode will leave the valves open all the time on my 16 sport.

Make sure there are no zip ties or anything else keeping the valves from operating.

I checked everything and the valves work perfectly when I'm in Sport mode above 3000RPM. They're closed (quiet) when the car is idling or it is shut off. I can easily move the lever to open/close the valves. Our car is not a Sport model...perhaps that's the issue. I'll probably purchase the Formula Dynamics kit.

That's not the problem. When you say 'move easily' do you mean 'can be moved, but agains spring pressure'?

They should, per Demarcom spring *open*. If they spring closed, they aren't going to work controlled by the car, either. They shouldn't stay closed when the car is off either. As the vacuum dissipates, they should gradually open, again driven by spring.

If they aren't springing open then
1) They are a bit broken (which may not be an issue)
2) You just need to push them to open and leave them there to get the result you're looking for.

Cheers

Perhaps I'm getting "open" and "closed" confused. "Open" should be louder, with "closed" being the quiet setting...correct? With the vacuum hoses removed, I can push on the rod and the each valve moves freely. If I push in on the rod, as soon as I let go, it springs back immediately to what I think is the "closed" (quiet) position. After I removed the vacuum hoses, I started the car and it was still "quiet".

The valves are open (loud) by default. I cant imagine you removed the wrong hose, but if you still hear a difference in manual vs. automatic idle, then something is not right. once you remove the hoses the valves have no way to close (to quiet)

That makes no sense at all

I suggest getting someone to start the car and activate / deactivate sport mode while you look at the valve.s

At cold start, the exhaust is quite loud...and it sounds great...but it gets quiet after about 20 seconds of idling. I removed the vacuum hose from each of the valves and then started the car (warm)...it was quiet. In sport mode, the only time it gets "loud" is above 3000RPM, so I know the valves are working. I'll get under it again this weekend and will have someone activate/deactivate sport mode while it's running with the rear end raised. I'l also try to manually activate the vales by pushing on the valve rod to see if it makes a difference. Otherwise, I'll just buy the FD kit!
