New Coupe GT Owner and New Coupe GT Owner Questions

I just bought a 2004 Coupe GT with 25,000 on the clock (pics below)... I've been shopping for the better part of 6 months and I'm really glad I waited... it gave me time to absorb as much as information as I could from the forum and gave me the knowledge of these cars I needed to feel confident in my decision to buy.

Couple of initial questions...

Key: I only received one blue key and the valet key... the blue key top button is broken... I'm having to lock and unlock the car manually (fine for the time being). I'm guessing that no anti-theft measures are enabled if am just turning the key in the door handle to lock up... is that right?

This is the option section from my window sticker... anyone have any idea what the $3500 worth of "other options" would be? Is that the skyhook?

I will probably be getting in the mod mood shortly... does the dbw install do as much for the GT as it does for the CC?

Nice car! Welcome to the community!! On the key you can get the soft button from Trident Parts (under maintenance). Just carefully pry the key open. You probably will want to replace the batteries as well.

By DBW, do you mean the Formula Dynamics DBWEM? If so, yes, it does significantly throttle response in 6MT cars. There have been a couple of 6MT owners review the DBWEM on this forum.

1) Thats a big problem. First of all, you should have TWO blue keys, otherwise someone out there can drive away with your car. The broken button on the key is also an issue because a replacement key will cost you. In your case, you should order two new blue keys and have the dealer (or someone with an SD3 device) reprogram them for your car. For the reprograming you either need a RED key or a RED key card (my GS came with a red key card). If you have no red key or red key card then you are in deep s**t.

2) The best thing to do is contact Maserati NA, an email was posted in the forum a while ago, you can ask them for the complete order sheet which should have more details about the "other options".

3) The DBW is only for a CC, it has nothing to do with a manual.

This is not exactly true. All moderns Maseratis come with a drive by wire (DBW) throttle system from the factory. There is an excellent, and very popular, enhancement module (DBWEM) sold by Formula Dynamics that improves the factory DBW system. Several members here with 6MT cars have added the Formula Dynamics DBWEM and have reported favorable results.

Well I certainly can't have anyone driving away with my car, fortunately I have the the red card so it should just be a matter of ordering the new keys and reprogramming. I'm actually really surprised the car starts with the blue key I have... the actuator underneath the rubber button is just straight up gone... the circuitry must be fairly independent because the trunk still works. Strange...

Yes, I was talking about the FD drive by wire system. I'm guessing that any gain for me will strictly be in throttle response. I was under the impression that the most benefit derived from the kit was in CC cars as it essentially modifies the shift program.

GD, yes I went ahead and got the blue one in Tx, its got 25,000 miles and was just too easy to run up to Austin and spend a lot of time checking it out and didn't even have to deal with the hassle of shipping. Btw, just read your "ding" story... you should have just told me that story and the deal would have been done lol.

AFAIK, the actuators only apply to the locking system (larger button) and trunk (smaller button) whereas the chip that deals with the ignition is independent of and unaffected by the actuators. As well, I believe the ignition chip is not reliant on battery power.

As to throttle response for the GT, it does seem a little lazy. I notice some lag when starting up in 1st gear, as described in this and other threads, but I don't find that I have to ride the clutch. Once moving, I don't notice any lag and have absolutely no complaints about the throttle response when I want it for passing, on a highway, hills, etc..

Welcome to GT ownership.

The DBW Enhancement is just that. It has an indirect affect on the CC in that quicker throttle response causes the CC clutch to engage faster. There is no direct control of the CC. It works on both GT and CC models equally. IT QUICKENS THROTTLE RESPONSE (sorry for yelling) ;)

Congrats and welcome to the forum!

We do offer a DBW upgrade for all of the Modern Maseratis, of course the programming is different and tailored to each model / transmission. The features of the module relating to the F-1 transmission are not felt on the Manual Transmission models as it does not have the robotized gearbox. It's still a worthwhile upgrade and we do offer a lower cost module for the manual tranmission cars.

Best Regards,
