What is your favorite OBD II Scan tool for use on the Maserati, and why. I need a new scan tool for use on a 2008 Alfa 8C Competizione and a 2014 Gran Turismo Sport. Also need it to work with Aston Vanquish. I know all the tools should work with any 1996 and later OBD II car, but some must be better than others.

2016 New Arrival Vgate ELM327 OBDII ICAR3 Bluetooth Vgate Green | eBay

This is the one I have and give out to customers when they need one. The are inexpensive, and can be kept in the glovebox because they are small. I use it with the Torque Pro 2 app. The module is bluetooth to your android phone. It is less than $30 (the bluetooth dongle and torque pro are sold separately) with purchase of the updated version of Torque Pro (they have a free version, the $5.95 version has tons of parameters than even normal scan tools don't have). I like the fact you can carry it in your pocket if you'd like. They also have them in different colors like red.

It seems you already understand what Chris was explaining about generic capabilities.

The best scan tool depends greatly on what level of access you want. An inexpensive one, as Craig suggested and stated, will get you very basic engine codes. If you want dealer level unfettered access, you only have 3-4 choices and they range in price from $3,000- $20,000. And like most things, more $$$= more acesess.

Yes, sorry, I did mention Android above. I don't use Apple products. Ironically, I recently connected my twin V-8s in my 34' boat so all the data would come up on my HDS 12 Chartplotter. The SeaFox system has special capabilities that is basically an active bluetooth scan tool for both motors when it's running but only works with my wife's iphone. It seems there is a split when it comes to who likes what phone. I do know the ones that work with the Iphone are more expensive. I just don't know which one to recommend in those applications. Mostly it seems I have Android clients.

Alternative to Autoenginuity for WAY less

I was considering purchasing the Autoenginuity scan tool the problem is I have an Autologic with $70k in software already and had absolutely no need for anything else other then Maserati and Ferrari and didnt want to spend $4k Cad on a so so tool. I was at my friends shop and noticed this scan tool sitting on his desk "Launch X431 Pro 3 "I picked it up, turned it on and saw "ferrari, Bugati, Maserati" in the menu. My first thought was "there's no way this thing is any good, probably just reads generic codes" but I may be wrong, it looks like this tool will do it all! went through the sub menus and it will do Clutch Bleed, PIS, and all other great things. I dont have a Maserati to plug it into right now but will have in a week, I'll let you know how it goes

Check out the link below for the Launch X431 Pro 3 tool

Welcome to the forum

What model will you be getting?

Excellent! There are many, many people her that will be interested in how the X431 works(including me). Other things of interest on top of those listed are solenoid leak rates and shift mapping. @Craig probably has a fairly long list of things that would be good to check.

I think this is also the scan tool the gentleman from the other thead was referencing to. I havent asked Voicey about it knowing he uses Texa the majority of the time. Basically what you'd need to do a clutch is to be able to write into the NCR (TCU) the new clutch configuration, reset the PIS, and run self learn. If you can do all of that your good as far as the clutch is concerned.

Copied from the UK site: voicey:

I have a Launch here - it's firmly at the bottom of the pecking order of diagnostic tools in our workshop.

When I first used it I thought it was a Chinese rip off/clone - that should give you an idea of what it's like to use. It does have some modules however there are so many revisions during a model run that you need to be lucky that it has the correct software version otherwise it'll misinform you at best and damage something at worst.

So to give you an idea of the quality of the launch - I did a clutch reading on a Ferrari before I left the workshop. The SD2 was at 44.78%. My other two premium tools were within 0.5% of that figure. The launch was reading 29.85% - way off.

If the Launch was your only tool you'd get into trouble real quickly.

That's bizarre- doesn't the Gearbox ECU supply the numbers from the sensors to the OBD port?
The software just displays it. The clutch wear is calculated manually from these numbers. Why would the number on the OBD port be different for Launch and Leonardo? or SD2?
I could be wrong of course but from what I remember that's the way it went down at the dealer..(that calculated my clutch wear to 144% btw;-) and the car still drove fine albeit shifted a bit slow....

On the Launch...Jacek, you are correct it is reading the numbers, but the software is what breaks down all the information...Like Voicey I`m not a fan...I have used one on Jags and Land Rovers and you are constantly F-ing around with the software version.. For example...If you had version 3.0 on your unit and you upgraded to 3.1, you would think it would do all of 3.0 and then some...Not this thing..As far as the clutch wear, it has been discussed on here that number isn`t always very accurate at all if someone didn`t reset it correctly when the clutch was replaced...Jason

I guess Jason covered this but the scan tool is what interprets the numbers into the algorithm of the clutch wear. I think I covered this before. So for instance, if I have a GS in front of me, it will take the closed clutch position and the new closed clutch position. These are the only numbers the NCR provides. The Scan tool is what takes those numbers, subtracts them, divides it from the thickness of a new clutch, multiplies it, and gives you the actual clutch wear. That algorithm is done with the software of the scan tool. So, if that's off the reading is off, when you write the new parameters into the NCR it will be off, and the PIS will be off. If it misreads the new closed clutch position, with the closed clutch position you have no foundation for the algorithm either.

I can give you an example, I actually did a PPI on a GS about 6 months ago. Well the gentleman selling the car actually took the car to someone I've always felt was reputable. So I thought the gentleman selling the car was well to put it lightly embellishing what the actual clutch wear was in order to sell the car. I called the gentleman who did the clutch wear read out, KNOWING there's no way he misread it. He looked up the data from the receipt and actually confirmed what the guy told me. I was beside myself, but he did read it with the Leo system and the read out was definitely wrong. I double checked my readings, and the algorithm to be sure I read it correctly. My read out was in line with a PPI that was done a year and half earlier by a Maserati dealership using the SD2/3 as well.

My point to this is, even using the Leo he somehow messed up the read out. But that being stated if you had a scan tool that far off to begin with, you don't want to mess with your car or someone else's. I'm glad Dave posted this from Aldous because what he is saying is true. If you're not careful you'll write something into the NCR that will have a huge impact on the drive-ability of the car. Then once it's done, how do you get it back to where it was with an inaccurate scan tool? Even with a good scan tool, once you write the new closed position in wrong, when you take the accurate scan tool you'll be guessing at what it should be new. Round and round it will go.

I posted this in the other thread, the only way I can know the accuracy of the scan tool is to have it in front of me, someone asked me about it being a Unicorn if it could do what the gentleman said it could. Now that we have data from a reliable source, namely Voicey/J that has done this, I would say, no it's not a Unicorn. It's seems to be a good way to comatose the vehicle you are working on. Seems Jason is echoing the same thing with the updates. So, anyway, I'm glad we had guys chimed in on it before someone did mess their car up.

I think as a code reader these knock off units are fine...I have used a Launch and an Autel...For the price they are fine...I`m not sure how well they work on a Maserati as I have never tried one...Don`t expect much tech. support if any...I have used them on Jags and LRs and they work ok, but the large gaps in what they can and cannot do really limit what a shop can do so it`s not suitable for professional work....Jason

X431 seem to cost 1000 dollars, a bit much just to read codes IMHO. A friendly main dealer will probably read codes twice a year for 5 years for that much. I would certainly spend 1000K on something complete though (although I realize I would probably get in to trouble with it and end running to the dealers any way).

A nice "read only" unit for about 2 or 300 US$ would be perfect for home use, for me at least. Is there one?

For a basic unit to link to an iPhone you have to get one that transmits on wifi. The Bluetooth units only pair with android. I find these very limiting. They don't even clear the maintainance codes. Depending on the app you get to read the data they offer lots of real time parameters in flashy skins if you want to pose as a tuner with your iPad. LOL Maserati owner wanting to look like a (500hp) civic owner.
