2013 Quattroporte S 4.7L

Huge problem. Hopefully not but I know where this is headed. 😕

On my way home from work, my battery light started flashing intermittently. Chalked it up to the alternator going out. Popped the hood and there was a slight whining noise coming from the alternator. Said okay, it’s due. Drove it to a friends house 4 miles down the street, everything was normal. Drove it 4 miles back home and that’s when all hell broke loose. I’m pulling into the garage and can smell a burning plastic / rubber smell. I wasn’t angled right coming into the garage so I tried to fold the mirrors up, and they flinched & wouldn’t work. Then a suspension light came on and went off. So I immediately shut it down and the car starts beeping hardcore & locked my key into the ignition. I pop the hood and smoke is pouring from under the intake and got worse and worse for 10 minutes. I unplugged the negative battery terminal and within 2 minutes it stopped smoking. Something with the electrical system just took a huge shit on me and I’m scared to death my wiring harness is trash.

Here’s what I’m hopeful for… The Alternator sits right under the intake where the smoke was coming from but I couldn’t see it coming from the front of the alternator, so maybe it’s coming from the back of the alternator. I can see under the intake and can see all the wires there are in one piece and look normal. I’m praying it’s just the alternator went bad and started smoking.

Anybody else have any advice or had a similar experience? I believe my alternator is covered under warranty but I’m scared there’s another issue that isn’t. It was smoking so bad I literally thought it was on fire and grabbed an extinguisher and a huge bucket of water. If all else failed, I was going to do the inevitable but the smoke stopped after unplugging the battery. Maybe it was a coincidence but I’m chalking it up as a short or something.

Before sending it off to Enzo’s, I’m going to try and pop the intake off and see what’s under. I need to see the damage.

UPDATE: Car is fixed and back home. It was the Alternator and it also needed a new battery. Bad alternator wiped out the battery. Huge Thanks to Jason & Vance for getting my baby back to me! I wish the warranty covered the whole cost but apparently is just covers some of the cost. Oh well, what can I do lol.

Sounds like the alternator has died...I have seen a few have a terrible death so I would just unhook the battery and have it towed...Jason
I greatly appreciate the quick response. I’ll call up the warranty place and have them send a tow truck out tomorrow or next week Monday. Thanks again! I really wonder why the alternator would go from being okay to taking a complete crap like that. Pretty weird.

That is how cars are...Just like a laptop, TV or cell phone..They can just crap out...The alternators on these cars don't last forever as they are installed in a high heat area...That is why we only use OE new and not rebuilt...I'm gonna be in Detroit till Wednesday so I don't know how long it will be before we can get to it...We'll be down to just one tech. and he is already busy...I'll get it fixed as fast as possible....Get in touch with Vance in the AM...Thx...Jason

@Jason@ Enzo`s Atlanta almost certainly has the right of it (no surprise!)

Might also be worth checking the belt and the A/C clutch. Wondering if the smoke might have been burning belt, but under the manifold does sound like alternator. All is not lost!

Yeah lol. Jason is the best. I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say he will be deeply missed if he decides to retire! There’s not many techs like him anymore.

I had the AC off today. Some days I use it, some days it’s a window down kinda day lol. I’m just hoping that the alternator didn’t melt a hole in my intake manifold. I’m not sure if it’s touching it but I sure hope it isn’t.

I would also recommend having Jason replace the ~3" coolant hose in the back of the engine while he's in there... Jason knows what I'm talking about
Last time I brought the car to him, he informed me that my engine doesn’t have that design. I was glad to hear that because I heard about it on another post. That just sounds like a terrible idea to have that there.

About 3 to 4 months back, the coolant hose going under the intake manifold decided to bust. I had no idea it was there as I wasn’t familiar with the car yet. I pulled apart the air intake box apart and couldn’t find the leak to save my life lol. So I took it to the professional himself.

That makes perfect sense to me. I’ve only used OEM parts on any car I’ve worked on. Enjoy your trip! I’m leaving to Florida on the 16th to the 22nd so I may wait to have it in to you guys until I get back. Unless I can drop it off and it can sit with y’all until I get back. I’ll call Vance in a few hours to see what he says. I can not thank y’all enough!

I agree, oem new. I will say that here in the NY tri state area, we have a REALLY super rebuilder who has just about every starter and alternator available on the shelf for just about anything. Few rebuilders do his level of quality. Place is AA Ignition in the Bronx. I have used him for easily 30 years.

Nice! I need to start traveling more. I’ve been limited to our surrounding states. Terrified of airplanes. Well I hope you have fun! I’ve got the car at your shop now. Vance is going to diagnose it and we will go from there. I hope it’s just the alternator. My warranty doesn’t cover wiring from what I saw. I’m trying to save as much money as I can so I can find a house kind of by Lake Lanier. I bought a boat 3 months ago so I want to find a house nearby!

Just happened to see this passing by. Not already mentioned, so I thought I'd chime in. A loose battery post (either one) can cause a QP5 alternator to die pronto. Guess how I know.
Both posts were nice and tight. I only know this because I panicked and unplugged the battery lol. Battery was nice and firmly connected & it also took a good bit of force to pop the clamps off. It’s with Enzo’s now so I’m just waiting to hear back from them. I’m leaving out of town Sunday, so it’d be nice to get it back safely in my garage but I’m not too worried about it. Cars in great hands. Alternator was definitely whining a bit so maybe it’s been on its way out for a while and I didn’t notice until it got bad. I upgraded the exhaust & am always blasting my music so it drowned the whining noise out lol. We will see what Jason says when they take a look at the car. I’ll keep y’all updated!
