Hey guys,

I’m asking for a friend….does the starter use a “gear” to start the car and it’s not being driven by the serpentine belt?

My friend is a a real idiot…even a real big jerk sometimes.

Kindly,
v/r,
Stephen

Here she is! That gear does all the work! Bolts directly into the engine block

Starter is an electric motor powered by the car battery only, no help at all from the serpentine belt. A gear on the end of the starter extends and "catches" the flywheel to turn the engine over, for startup. Once the starter disengages, its gear retracts back and away from the flywheel.

Is your friend aware of any car ever that has used a belt to start? I'm just curious as to where your friend got this idea ;)

Well….my friend sometimes is not the brightest bulb in the box…..in fact….he fell out of the “dumb tree” and hit every branch on the way down.

😂😂😂😂🤣😂

Perhaps he's thinking of the old days when you had motors you would wrap a cord around and yank! Trying to remember if it was my grandfather's lawn mower or something similar!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 - I asked my “friend” why he would ask that and he said honestly, he just didn’t know and was too lazy to fully investigate. I told him he was an idiot and to not be lazy - I think he “ghosted” me LMAO!

I used a mower like that as a kid to make my "hustle money" to play Galaga at the Arcade...lol.

Several of the hybrid car models by ford and honda use a belt driven Starter/generator assembly for starting, generation and for the hybrid power assist. Nothing on the Maserati side though.
