I have a 2012 Maserati GT. Occasionally I get a grinding noise during startup. I had a brand new starter replaced about a week ago. Even after that, I experienced the same sound again after that. The mechanic of course cannot duplicate the sound. I'm going to take the car back to the shop, I just want to hear from other GT owners for their opinion first. The problem usually occurs after the car is hot, but sometimes when cold.

I will add a youtube link so you can hear the sound. Has anyone experienced this before??

I wasn't able to post the rest of the video, but if you turn the ignition key back to off and start the car again. It always starts. I've had the ignition fail to start 3 different times, but it always starts.

Car engines often stop in the same place as far as rotation goes...This can cause wear with the ring gear on the flex plate...If you have already replaced the starter than this maybe next...Jason

hi , your starter is HS

change by a new ( original OEM )

take a plastic screwdriver and tap on the starter a bit, you'll see it will not make any more noise and will start

Jason@Enzo's was correct about the ring gear on the flex plate being damaged. There's about 1-2 inch part on the flex plate with damaged teeth. The transmission has to be removed in order to replace the flex plate. Looks like an expensive job to repair

I'm surprised that a car with only 53K miles could get such severe damage on the flywheel.

Any thoughts?

Glad the diagnosis was pinpointed, but sorry it's going to be an $$$ fix.
Thanks again J for all you do for us.
My 2 cents says maybe the prior owner frequently tried starting it with a weak battery to may times (and over time) causing the stator gear to not fully engage and grind? As Jason said, the engine tends to stop at the same place when shut down. That could explain why it was chewed out only in that certain 1-2 inch spot.

Have they given you a quote for the job? I feel like it’s not bad to drop the trans and replace flex plate. That’s also a part id try to find as a pull off part from a wreck because it’s not a high wear part.
So, you have never actually done the job? but you feel like that thing will just pop right out of there ? I'm not sure I agree...Why you want a used part here makes no sense IMO? J

Thanks guys. No quote on price yet. Shop is trying to locate the part, if may have to come from Italy if the dealer doesn't have it. I should have a price on Monday according to the shop

A dealer isn't gonna stock a M139 flexplate these day IMO...You maybe waiting a bit if one isn't in a USA ...Italian car parts are a whole deal in itself..It's F-uped...J

You’d know better Jason, purely a ball park assessment of what it’d take to drop my trans in the QP5 when I was down there swapping the driveshaft and it didn’t seem like it would be terribly complicated, which I’d assume a professional who’s done it a few times before would be efficient at it.I also didn’t see the flywheel as a complex part and so I figured that’d I’d feel comfortable using a cheaper pull off, but again, you’d know better.
