I've done some searching of the forum and it seems most of the talk about radar detectors is about K40s or Valentines.

I only plan to use mine off and on in two situations - driving mountain roads for fun in Central Coast CA or on highway cruises. I won't use it around town...I don't think ;)

I was thinking that for these "part time" uses, the Escort Solo S2 cordless dectector made a lot of sense....but would love to get other input.

Thanks,

Shaun

I got the K40 with the laser jammer in the Cadi... and I hate it... it false’s a lot...

The RRS has the V1 Valentine... and that one false also... but I'm upgrading it to the Passport 9500CI next week

But the one I have in the GS is the Passport 9500i with a Lidatek laser jammer... and that works like a charm. I've already gotten out of 2 laser radar traps with it... doing 200 km :D

I've got a V1, and I've always been happy with it - can't speak to the Passport 9500, however. I do know that the one thing all of the various tests of radar detectors seem to agree on, however, is that the cordless ones don't cut it - I think the power demands are too high. So whatever you pick, I'd go with something that plugs in.

Radar detector detectors!

I don't know if it is an issue in California, but as Radar detectors are illegal here, one of the issues to consider is not just power consumption, but whether the box leaks and therefore detectable by radar detector detectors, namely the Spectre III. Reportedly this can detect everything but the Beltronics STI Driver.

Currently running the new K40 Caliber with front and rear jammers and dual radar pickups

I find it to be a ton less false prone then the older K40 undetectable unit

it has a wireless remote control and I mounted the blue LED flush above the gauges in the cluster...clean and undetectable

Radar detectors mostly legal

As far as I know they are only illegal in Virginia and Washington DC (for private parties - commercial drivers have more restrictions, I believe).

Another vote for the V1. It's a good radar detector as well a great grocery store and gas station detector. In all seriousness, it does detect radar from quite a ways, including around corners(headed through the gap...starts going off pretty weak...i know there were no other sources, sure enough it was a cop). just have to use a little bit of common sense when it goes off to react appropriately. Doesn't jam laser though.

V1 all the way. Been using one since 1998 in the Viper. What the heck is a V2?

Shaun, I use my Valentine V1 in town all the time, it already saved me a few times on De La Vina.

I used to get lots of falses in town, but haven't got many anymore, it's like that thing "learned" about the false spots in Santa Barbara!

The thing i really like about my 9500i, that it remembers all falses by GPS with a thing called "TrueLock Signal Rejection".

To read more about it... check out http://www.escortradar.com/9500i.htm

Passport 9500ci

I have the older non-GPS passport in the Maserati, the Passport 9500ci in my new A6. I think the V1's are better wrt range - sooner warning, but the laser jamming is a must-have now in WA state, and the GPS capabiltiy of the 9500ci is oh so good - no false warnings.

I know that my V1 has saved me COUNTLESS times... and it picks up the radars much faster and farther away...

On the last maserati drive, I picked up the cop that was stopped WAY before Vungul did (about 1/2 a mile or more ahead)

Lots of strong votes for either V1 or Passport 9500ci...but I am concerned about the power cord hanging down to the cigarette lighter...unsightly and getting in the way of the shifter. I read about tapping into the power source in the rearview mirror. Can that be done if I have the automatic electrically dimming mirror?

Shaun,

I tapped my V1 not into the Mirror, but rather into the passenger vanity mirror... The light is a 12 volt and it is switched (turns off when you turn the car off).

Looks almost OEM... and totally hidden.
