I am the second owner and have no idea how the first owner drove the car, but the dealer informed me that my clutch is "rather rusty" and the flywheel is scorched. What causes that?

Caused by a clutch disc spinning against the flywheel and pressure plate.

Usually do to weak springs in the pressure plate in a conventional clutch/shift system.

In the F1/CC systems it's due to computer controlled slippage. This is why backing up long distances is very detrimental to clutch life for this system as is driving in "auto" mode.

Yeah, I don't do either of those things, hence my confusion.

Ok that I understand but that problem is not exclusive to those two conditions solely.

The F1/CC systems have considerable slip built into them and that's the ire! So no matter what you do that disc will slip regularly.

There is no torque converter in these trannys! Something has to make up for the make/break clutch connection. Thta is slip!

Realize too that the F1 system was not designed for a car that stops a great deal. So that then had to engineered in for the road cars.

The concept is great but the functionality is less than ideal.

Bottom line is that it gets expensive to own an F1/CC tranny vehicle.
