I would like to buy a radar detector and I need some recommendation here. I know it is an old topic to discuss but i still can't decide which one to buy.

So, what do you guys think? V1 or Passport9500IX? or is there anything better within those price range?

Thanks

I have a 9500ix. After the first few days, you really start to wonder how anyone can own a RD that does not have GPS. The V1 has a little bit better range but the 9500ix blocks out all the falses so after a short while, all you hear is real threats.

You really can't go wrong with either. What is more important to you, a little longer range or filtering of falses/GPS?

Well, I guess I'm gonna need the one with the longer range since I'm using it on highway. I heard that V1 has a better sensitivity towards laser and also it has arrows showing where the cop is.
Is that really true if I get a speeding ticket, I could claim it and get a rebate from V1?

Radar detectors are usless against laser. If you are worried about laser, you should get a high quality laser jammer.

Some people really like the arrows on the V1. They don't help in my opinion. If my RD is going off, I'm going to slow down regardless of where the cop is.

I did extensive research on this. I ended up with the 9500 over the V1, and Im now having 2 9500ci's (includes laser jammer) installed my other vehicles. All the quality reviews always chose the Escort. The GPS is far more valuable then the arrows, I could not imagine the need for them, who cares where they are, hit the brakes and keep your eyes on the road :D

Great site, and reviews: http://www.radarroy.com/2008/05/escort-9500ci-diver-experience-review/

I love my 9500xi. I finally have a chance against these local cops. The ONLY drawback is the need to download new updates every month or 2. however is it easy to do and lets you know not only where speed traps (have been) but also where the red light cams are. try the passport you'll love it.

Passport seems to be the winner here. I will consider passport then. Thanks for the input guys.

By the way, do I have to pay for an update for the passport?
I would consider both. In fact, I think both will allow a 30 day "test drive" if you want to test side by side. Although, I'm certain you would keep the Escort.

Speedcam/red light cam updates require a pay subscription after 2 months. I'm not sure about firmware updates.

As I stated before I have the 9500xi. however I have not gotten the jammers because from what I understand the cop can tell that he/she is getting jammed or shifted. My fear is once the cop realizes the signal has been shifted he would still find a reason to write a ticket. Sure without a number on the radar it would be difficult to prove in court but from what I have seen cops don't always think that far ahead. One time (when I knew he did not have me on radar) I got a ticket for failure to obey a tracfic control device. that being a radar gun. Knowing this would not hold up in court I fought it. points were withheld however I paid EVERYTHING else including court cost. So basically I lost. anyway long story short any good stories / explanation for why the signal was shifted? thx john

I have both the Valentine V1 and the Passport 9500xi (the V1 is in my Maserati and the 9500 in my daily driver).

The passport does lock out falses which makes it a good choice in the city. The V1 is far too sensitive for practical use downtown but it is amazing on the highway picking up Ka band signals over 2 miles out.

The arrows on the V1 are very usefull. When I bought the 9500, I found the inability to tell where the source is located to be bothersome plus making it harder to screen out falses from other peoples cheap radar detectors.

If your main use is highway - I would go for the V1.

V1, it does the job and it is proven. I don't need a radar detector that I need to have a subscription to so that it can tell me which lights have cameras, give me life advice, and sing me songs when I'm down.

V1 all the way for me.. Been using Valentine since '98 when I bought my Viper. It's saved my beacon MANY times. Personally, I prefer hearing everything. After a while you become an expert at picking out the real from the junk. I guess it's like flying a plane that takes off and lands itself.. You're screwed when something goes wrong. And keeping with the plane analogy, I just jump in, turn on the V1, grab my "joy stick" and throttle-up

Exactly.. AND if you need to know where red light camera are you have issues!
