while working on my project 02 coupe, I ran into what appears to be an aftermarket
switch, three position lower knob and adjustable upper knob

It is on the driver side, below an to the left of the steering column

followed the wires to two small (3/4 inch diameter) speakers/tranducers?

switch also has wires to two tiny LEDs on the top cover to the steerig column

finally, looks to have wire to back of car (truck area by module on top ofdisc player)

what the heck is this?

guesses welcomed

If they are parking sensors, they are aftermarket I suspect. My 02 has factory fit, and nothing like that.

I wonder if they are, in fact ultrasonic transducers for some kind of aftermarket alarm?

thanks gentlemen
for the theories and the humor (I am in need of same after going through this car!)

parking sensors make sense but only if I find sensors in the back (I'll look)

I was thinking it might be an alarm system but only a crazy person would add more capability

to what is (IMO) an over-designed, error prone, low stability, terrifically costly alarm system which
yields debatable confidence to the car owner, again only my opinion

switch function identified

followed wiring to radar unit behind the grill so it seems to be aftermarket radar
switch body integraty is suspect (visual) but this is not a priority for me right now
no attachment of rear facing wires to anything (wires caped in trunk/boot)
no tie in to alarm system which is a big relief

thanks again

Probably used to feed from a rear radar sensor so it could alert on stalkers. In some US states, radar detectors are illegal, so people go for built-ins, often with an alert LED somewhere near the speedometer. In other cases, it may be to avoid theft, or to avoid annoying the LEOs that might otherwise not pay attention - if you have an obvious radar detector, it basically says "I'm going to be speeding".
