Own a 2005 90th anniversary edition bought used with 27k in 2017. Top hangs up 2/3 of way down. Motor still trying. This is third time. Once when dealer had it. Again 2 ago, fixed at euro. specialist for $350 something about bands?? And now. It is as though a "wrench was in there to gum up the works." Also, two small holes now in top on each side like a small hole auger was used. Checked all fluids. Just won't complete the closing. Alignment? What's happening?

Tony. Thanks. I just ran down his particulars and sent him a message. He is located only 40 miles from me.

Definitely sounds like the bands. It was just fixed on mine. You can test it pretty easily. Bring the top back the to where the window has started to stow and the before the top stops working. If you get out and look at the top from the side, you'll see a moveable bar and the straps. You should be able to slide the bar rearward. Once it is moved back, continue with the top opening operation. If that's the problem, the top will continue opening and stow. We just replaced the bands with elastic from from the hobby store.

As far as the marks on both sides, I have the same issue. I think I have narrowed it down to 2 long sharp screws that are uncovered on the top storage cover. The screws seem (1 on each side) to be right where the cover comes down on the top when it is stowed. I shortened them and covered them with rubber. Not 100% sure this is the cause, but I can't see anything else in the compartment that could be causing it.

The issue is the bands. When the second bar does not pull back like it should it wears a hole in either side of the top at the point of binding. Once the bar issue is resolved (new elastics) this will not be a problem. Obviously will not fix the damage that has been done, but will prevent it from worsening.

Those holes are very common and I got 4 of them a couple of years ago and had to replace the top. The shop constructed custom straps with a much denser elastic (from BMW) and so far so good.
Following that I learned that there is a shop somewhere in Pennsylvania that can actually reweave those holes and make the top look "good as New". A salesman from Pennant motors mentioned this to me but I didnt follow up on it, since I'm on the west coast. I think they would share that info if you called them.
