I can hear a faint tap/whir from the top of the engine just behind the air feed pipe and slightly to the left of the right (looking from front to back) cam cover. From this rubbish description has anyone else experienced this or am I being slightly paranoid?

I get a tapping (about 2/second) from the same area very obvious at idle, its metallic in sound almost like a faint hammering on a nail .
Had the same question.

Is it getting any worse over time?

No it hasn't but I've been told it is normal. My M3 had a similar noise.
