Hi. I'm trying to remove the shift knob cap from my '07 ZF Automatic so that I can have it hydrographically printed with a carbon fiber pattern. Right now the cap is Piano black, but it has some chips and it's very plain looking. I'm taking some parts from another car to be printed anyway so I'd like to do this piece.

Anyway, I removed the knob by pulling straight up and the whole assembly came off (please see photos). Can anyone tell me how to remove the cap from the rest of the knob.

Thanks.

Hey my man, did you ever figure this out? I'm actually doing this exact same thing and I can't find anything about it on the Internet. Can't even find a part number for the carbon fiber insert that goes at the top of the shift knob.

I want to disassemble this knob but I don't want to destroy the cap when I remove it from the knob. Thanks in advance!!

I've not gotten that far into the knob but the silver ring is likely screwed in place and holds things together. Otherwise, it is glued in place (probably screwed). If it does unscrew, the plunger should slide out but after that, it may all be heat-glued together. Let us know.

No, I never figured it out so I gave up. I ended up selling the car and moving on to a 4-door e90 M3. I miss the looks and the sound, but it was just too much maintenance for my taste. But retirement is on the horizon, perhaps then I'll have time for a higher maintenance car. Like a Gen 3 QP...
