I just picked up my car at the dealership. Problem solved! There are two sensors in the frame of the windshield that are located near the holes where the pins from the top make contact with the windshield frame. Due to lack of use the sensors were not operating freely. They are sealed units and can’t be serviced, however a little contact cleaner and a few operations of up and down with top and the problem disappeared. The dealer quoted $2300 for the sensors plus labour to install them.
CRAZY!
Did they show you exactly where thhe sensors are and what to look for???

update on my roof operation ,as my passenger side window was going down in increments ,my odometer was not blinking now my odometer is blinking and the window goes down without a problem and the roof operation warning has gone away. seems like it may be a software problem . and not a sensor problem . at this stage of the game I put a piece of black tape over the blinking odometer I,m not ready to bring it to the stealership i have heard horror stories and thousand of dollars in repairs costs and the problem came back

Blinking odometer is sometimes a sign of proxi-misalignment. It might be a simple fix. Or it might be a fault node on the canbus,.

My update...my "roof operation not available" warning light is on 100% of the time. Been that way since the dealer tried to fix it. Top will not move using the button in the car. Passenger side window still goes down in steps, again after dealer tired to fix the roof. Someone said something about using the key in the door to lower and raise the top in another tread. Tried it this weekend and my top works! So at least I have a work around.

We do not have a Maserati dealer anywhere near us! Can you just tell me where the contacts are located? Is this a viable fix, it appears this is a fairly normal Gran Tourismo convertible issue....I do not want mu=ine to get to the point I need a key in door work around!

Just in case I ever need it (hopefully not) what is the key in door work around? Does your car beep incessantly at you still???

If by beeping incessantly you mean the beeping sound associated with the warning light, then no, mine no longer beeps as I've turned the alert sound off. You can do that via the radio menus.

As for the key in the door workaround, if you put the key in the drivers door lock (outside the car) and turn the key to the left and hold, the windows will lower, the roof will raise, the windows will raise and the car will lock. Turn the key to the right and hold and the opposite happens. This workaround seems to work for me, but given all the different problems people are seeing, I'm making no promises it'll work for anyone else.

This is going to be weird but bear with me since electrical networks in cars can be ridiculous, have you checked to be sure your volume and phone controls on the steering wheel ALL work? It's possible that the NVO (steering angle sensor/wheel module containing your clock spring and wiper/turn signal stalks) is faulty OR your steering wheel buttons are faulty and it's causing a bad message on the CAN bus and taking out the roof function as a result. Just had one of these in the shop and it turned out the steering wheel buttons were the problem with the convertible top.

My 2010 is doing the same exact thing....
My 2010 GT keeps showing this message "roof operation not available see handbook" funny this is, the convertible top works fine, and it shows this message when I have the top up and I am not trying to put it down, just driving. Anyone have any ideas? Also not sure if its related, but the lights on my steering wheel blink when the lights first come on, then it stops and they stay on. I love my Italian beauty, but sure likes to be high maintenance. BTW, I replaced the battery 2 weeks ago per my dealer recommendation (I had not received this message, until AFTER the battery was replaced!)

I've been having the same issue on my 2010 (see my various post above) for over a year now. Seems like several have similar issues and some have found fixes to their specific problem. I've yet to see a common solution though.

I call that out only to say that I found a fix to my problem as well, your milage may differ...While installing the AuCar stereo, I decided to bite the bullet and buy all new pieces to replace the sticky buttons throughout the vehicle. One of the parts was the Central Dashboard Trim Plate (Part #98606600) which includes a new roof open / close switch. This new switch seems to have fixed my issue. Note this part isn't cheap, for my specific car it was $680.

I'll add since it's been discussed above, my passenger side window was going down in increments and that seems to have been fixed (no clue how or why). Also, my steering wheel radio buttons do not work. I still need to find parts to replace those. So there may be something to @mellino19 thoughts around CAN faults taking out other functions.

My Grancabrio 2010 has exactly the same problem, the sequence in which it happened was, first the steering wheel buttons started blinking whenever the car was cold started, then after 5-7 mins worked fine;
A week or so after completely stopped working, and with it the “roof operation not available” showed;
The fault message is intermittent, yet the roof works fine (i just need to wait to when the message disappears),
The key in door solution works;
The dealership in Doha, Qatar, could also not pinpoint the problem,
One noteworthy mention;
I think this happened after i wiped the sticky buttons on my stereo (display) unit to clean them; (more specific - the numbers pad and volume turner under the screen).
I DID NOT clean the buttons on the steering wheel though,
By the way, Doha is always hot compared to the other posters here that noticed it was temperature related.

i really hope maserati comes up with a diagnostics method teaching their dealers to pinpoint the exact problem;

i am 90pct sure its electrical/static/wiring related, nothing to do with sensors, but a simple defect in the tiniest button / electric short / is surely behind this annoying issue;

keep this blog alive until we have a solid / cost logical solution

I too had this problem. It also conincided with the steering wheel controls not working. After a lot of mucking about i spent a pile of money on a new clock spring and steering wheel controls and the problem has gone away. We also tweaked the microswitch on the header rail but I doubt that was it.

How did you turn the alert sound off?
