Hi Guys,

I’m having a challenge which is keeping me busy for several months now, and I cannot figure out what is the problem. Maybe there is some out on this forum who can help or give a good tip.

To clean some of the buttons I took out the display and the aircon unit. Took the aircon unit apart, cleaned the buttons and put it back together. All went well, nothing strange. When everything was back together and started the car I noticed that the display did not show the temp. and fan settings anymore. The still are shown but in grey, like it is inactive or something. Before it was working properly. But here comes the strange thing. Everything is working as it should except for the display. The fan is working properly in each setting I select. The temperature knob is working fine (although I cannot see the exact temperature I select, it is working). But for whatever I do I cannot get the display to show anything.
It is not a big problem since everything is working fine except the display, but it annoys me.

What I did so far:
Checked if I reconnect the wiring properly
Checked if there is any lose wiring
Checked all the fuses related to aircon and display
Reset the aircon unit (by double button press and ignition)

Anyone having an idea where to start to solve this problem?

It would very much look like a connection issue between the NIT CANBUS and the AC / Device.
Have you done a battery reset? If that doesn't work I wonder if some kind of proxi-alignment would sort it out

Thanks @Catmanv2 for your reply. I did do the battery reset but didn't solve the problem. However, your remark about the proxi-alignment got me thinking that it might have something to do with the fact that I installed a Loudlink bluetooth kit earlier. About one year ago I installed this kit. After installing everything worked perfectly, including the display. Later I pulled the screen and aircon unit out to clean some buttons and the problem came up. At least I can try to disconnect the Loudlink and see if that makes a difference.

About this proxi-alignment. How is this performed? Is it something easy you can do yourself, or is there some more advanced programming of the NIT CANBUS involved?

Not so sure 4200/GS requires a proxy alignment. Where it's more of a "plug & plug" system i.e. far less sophisticated that a QP/GT/GC. A battery reset typically cures such ills and the HVAC reset hasn't worked either.

I suspect Catman is right about this being a simple connection issue. I know you've checked for loose connectors but have you checked for a loose pin within the connectors or a loose wire to a pin. There have been a few report HVAC issues where a single pin has been partially pushed out after an ambient temp. sensor change.

As for a loose wire! When I moved the NIT all the cabling was new with one exception. Thought I'd repurpose an existing cable but in doing so I caused a wire to work loose. Assuming it to be my own new cables, and having double checked everything again, only to realise I'd been a bit clumsy caused much amusement. "Arrrrghh FFS man" I think was the expression.

You're right, of course, Neil. No proxy on the 4200. I can't imagine it's the Loudlink at all. I think you're right about a broken pin or wire. I can't find the pin out now though.

Don't know if this helps, but when my ignition switch hangs up after starting, that is the exact display that I get. Defrost, no matter what the output is set on, 0C no matter what the temp is set to, manual fans, and the display is gray instead of black. Wiggling the key restores the display. I know that may not be your issue, but a loose or poor connection, would mimic that situation. Are there more than one power inputs to the unit?

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the wiring and connectors are the suspect. Previously I checked the wiring and connectors for the display and aircon unit only but not the connectors to the NIT. I didn't expect a connection with the ignition, but it is good to check that as well. Feels like a project is coming up to check all wiring and connectors...

The NIT reference was purely illustrative - as you haven't touched it during recent dismantling I'd very much doubt it's the cause of the issue. Whereas, the other connectors that were removed are worth checking.

It's an excellent shout from Oishi - occasionally when the key doesn't return correctly after starting there can be temporary issues with central dash functions. Aircon, side mirror, etc. Try wiggling the key as suggested. I believe there is a small return spring in the key barrel that wears.
