I have been following the forum for a few months and have found it to be very helpful. I am planning on purchasing a QP in the near future. The 2007 seems to be at a good price point right now. Also an automatic is the transmission of choice.
So I had just few questions for the forum, any input advice would be great.

Buying a Certified PreOwned is it necessary? Most 2007 models still have a year to 1 1/2 years left on the original factory warranty. Plus the closest Maserati dealership is 2 hours away. But the peace of mind of an extra 2 years coverage does sound appealing.

Also any added benefit to buying the car through the dealership versus through a third party such as an auction?

I have read some other threads regarding purchasing a used Maserati, but if anyone has some words of advice I would be grateful.

Your on the right track so far. An 07 Q auto is the way to go. A CPO from a dealer will give you peace of mind, as long as it is a good value. If possible get the car from the dealer, if only to establish a relationship with them. Buy the car from a dealership, and they might even send a tow truck to your house 2 hours away if something goes wrong. You shouldn't buy these cars from an auction unless you know what you're doing. Good luck.

Yes, if you want an automatic, it is the trans of choice... If you prefer a car that is more expressive and sports-car like, then the F1 is the transmission of choice. I had a choice in 2007 and I went with the F1 (and dumped the 7-series BMW I had with the ZF auto transmission)...

I'd say if you are considering a QP or a Mercedes, or BMW, then the auto is your trans. If you wish you could add 2 more doors to a real sports car, then the F1 is the right tranny to go with.

Either is a good choice as long as you've driven them both and made an informed choice. It's worth boarding a plane if necessary to ensure you've driven both. That's what I did.

Good luck with your purchase decision.

I have contacted several Maserati dealerships and the cost of CPO is 2,000, adds 2 yrs/50k miles coverage minus infotainment system.
My problem is a used 2007 through third party (ie no chance of certifying it) is around $60-64K, usually warranty for another 12 - 18 months.
While buying from the dealer with the option for the extended warranty is between $68-72K.
Which way to go? Thanks for any advice.

A CPO from the dealer might be $2 K, but there is always an added premium buying from a dealer. The price for the car is always going to be $4 - $5 K more buying from a dealer, regardless of CPO. A good car, with low miles, all the service history, and is $8 K cheaper than the same car at the dealership is a good buy. For me everything else equal, I would pay a $5 K premium to buy from a dealership. This will go along way when you go back to buy a Ferrari.

Often times the very best deals can be had from dealers who took the cars on trade in. A mercedes dealer, BMW dealer, Lexus dealer etc who don't normally sell these cars but take one as a trade in will want to flip them and they often have room to undercut going market rate based on what they paid out for the car in trade. If you happen to buy a CPO the 2K is well worth it, as these cars, in general, will have far more costly maintenance issues than 2K before they get to 100,000 miles.

Buying from a dealer other than a Maserati dealer is just like buying from a third party. The implied benefit from buying from an actual Maserati dealership is the relationship gained when you do go back for service or warranty work. A car bought from any other dealer can not be CPOed by Maserati NA. Also, other dealers do sell Maseratis, and some of these cars are sourced from auctions, and not trade ins.
