Picked up my new baby on Thursday what an amazing few days since then. It's been tough just to get out of the car never mind actually go into the house and focus on anything else.

The drive back across London was fraught. I stalled in auto by pressing the accelerator and brake at the same time in Fulham. Had a few groups of kids give me a big WOW in Kensington. Then had an oncoming fellow Maserati owner give me a headlight flash around Regents Park, I had not mastered the lights so just fumbled around and gave a wave.

I had serious reservations about the 4200 with so much nonsense on the web about sloppy gear changes and poor handling. From experience so far the gear change takes practice but when you "get it" it's fantastic. Just take your foot off the accelerator for a second and its silky smooth. I had a Pug GTI 180 which the press destroyed but when you learnt how to drive it the little monster was brilliant. Much better than anyone gives it credit for.

The acceleration is just awe inspiring with a wonderful engine howl for company. The engine sounds especially fantastic in the Limehouse Tunnels, if you can, try it.

As for the handling in regular mode it’s smooth and sharp, in sport a little harder and really sharp. No roll and the chassis feels rock solid. The 911 maybe sharper but it does not have 400bhp and sound like a thunder clap on acceleration. Not surprisingly I don’t drive everywhere at the extreme handling limits and I’d back myself against a 911 C2 / C4, M3, or S4 any day. There is such a thing as driver skill which journalists never seem to mention. Plus the sheer power on the straights.

I found the GT a funny car: essentially a beautiful elegant coupe with vulgar stick on side skirts , a max power carbon fibre clad interior, 10 bph extra by virtue of a simple exhaust adjustment, lowered 10mm, and an extra 5k on the second hand market. I imagine your Maserati dealer could make the worthwhile adjustments for 1/2k if you felt you needed it.

However the real point of the Masarati is the sheer class. It just oozes personality, elegance, sophistication, pedigree, and understatement. Indeed the interior is utterly astonishing, a different planet to a boring Audi/VW hybrid, or BMW. People warned me that the Sat Nav only worked in Italy, or the screen was only 100 pixels. All twaddle, indeed the Sat Nav auto zoom is just brilliant. There seem to be more Porches than people in my part of NW London if you include the Cocksters and Gaymans. BMW 3 series are almost generic and AUDI VW clones leave me completely cold. I must give the RS4 and R8 a honourable pass, both brilliant.

It’s the knicker test next week. I have a date with a lovely girl and don’t need the Maserati to convince her that I am a suitable male. Will I turn up in the Maserati? Yes. Will be thinking about the car during our wonderful evening? Yes. Will I hope she gets an emergency phone call and has to leave early so I can jump back in the car as quickly as possible? Yes. If she looks at the car when I pick her up and says, “Oh is that a Porshe?” or “I don’t like the colour.” or “My brother has an M3” am I legally allowed to run her over? Finally if she says “Wow a Maserati!” should we get married on the spot? We’ll see.

Finally how has this car gone so totally under the radar? Seems quite ridiculous but good for me.

Anyway so far so very good.

Questions:
1. I’m interested ion the Loudlink MP3 any experience?
2. I can’t park with out being three feet from the curb, any advise or experience? The mirrors tilt down to help and I still mess up every time!
3. Is the Maserati drivers headlight flash common, I am in a club? Wow!

Congrats on the new car! Post pictures or we will all assume you are a liar

I think it all boils down to the very low production volume (at least until recent years).

There are a few Loadlink threads here on Maseratilife. Lots of positive reports. Just be prepared to lose CD changer functionality.

Just a bit of practice.

Never experienced the headlight flash before. Might be a UK thing.

Yes, I am pretty sure that would be acceptable. I see no wrong in it.

Congratulations on the car!

Congratulations on the car - it's a complete blast!!! You mentioned about the RS4.....have got an opportunity to trade my 06 GS LE for a brand new RS4 cnv with 700 miles on it.....would anyone trade if in my situation? I've been debating like crazy over the past few days but probably happy with my beautiful Italian baby.....

P.S. Throwing her off London Bridge is better than running her over....:D

1. no sorry, my GS comes with the Infotainment that plays mp3 files.

2. you'll get used to it eventually, you "mark" the spot with your eyes before you start parking, then use the mirrors for help. I also try to always park on the drivers side, so I can roll my window down and stick my head out.

Even better, you can ask your dealer to disable the car from going into neutral when the drivers door is open, thus you can open the door and stick your body out in a fancy way and impress the crowd at how you park a maserati (we do this in lambos).

3. Yes it is, you'll see it happen almost everywhere in Europe.

Thanks for all the advice especially parking.

RS4: I don’t think the convertible is the best choice. The best derivative is the Avant, just the pure irony of an estate car that can destroy pretty much anything on the road?

Good advice - thank you.

Even though the RS4 cnv is more exclusive than the GS in the US (only 300 were imported) AND since the car is new and was only titled in January AND since it is a true 6 spd (am I convincing myself otherwise  ), I've decided to keep my '06 GS LE (warranty until December)...I drove it this morning and I realized that it puts a smile on my face every time I sit in it - pure bliss :D I saw another RS4 cnv this morning....(I live in So Cal...), it wasn't nearly as beautiful as my GS - no comparison.

Now I'm going to put an even bigger smile by getting a Kreisseig exhaust installed in the coming months..........................

Thanks!

I agree - in Europe (being a Brit myself), the RS6 Avant would be my choice (since it is a family car....;) and I could persuade the missus that we need it) - shame it's not available in the US.

In any case, the Maser going to stay and I'm going to have some fun with the mods once my warranty expires......yay!

No More Audis For Me!
Had 2 Audi's - TT and still have my 2001 A6 - bought new. Loved them both. Only in the last year has my A6 needed any work other than brakes, tires and oil change. In the last year, put about $2k into her - not bad after all this time.

Beautiful car, and I'm learning myself what it's like to have one sitting in my garage. BTW, I hope you got a great deal because the steering wheel is on the wrong side:eek:
