I just had my car ('02 Spyder) serviced. My dealer told me that there will be a new NIT module controlling the reception, radio, NAV, and screen available shortly. Maserati has approved it for my car so my dealer has already ordered it for me.

Saw your post on the Maserati Owner's forum. What does NIT stand for - I'm not familiar with the acronym.

I dropped my dealer an email, asking if he can get the update done for my '02 Spyder - he has the car until next Thursday, so the timing is good!

Dietrich - any chance you could ask your dealer what the changes are? Is the new module some kind of control module which sits behind the screen, or is it a new screen etc? I'm guessing the former, but you never know...

I have an 02 Spyder which doesn't get very good radio reception and I asked my dealer to look into seeing if the reported (on this board) antenna modifications could be done and he came back saying that it was as good as it was going to get...

I just picked up my 2002 Spyder after the dealer performed several updates, inluding the NIT. The NIT change updates the software driving the center console screen.

That update brings some new Nav and radio features - the one I like is the ability to turn NAV routing off (finally!). The actual Nav map display looks identical (I did not receive new disks as part of the update, so the maps themselves didn't change). I'll play around with the system next week to see if I can find any other new or changed features.

My dealer said there's an upcoming change to improve radio reception. It will be wiring change and takes 11 hours to complete. My guess is that the change requires the replacement of a major wiring harness. I'm not certain I'm going to have that update performed.

From memory, here's the list of updates applied by the dealer:
- New fuel lines
- NIT update as mentioned above
- Updated Cambiocorsa software
- Replaced clutch with 2004 spec unit (two-tang)
- Replaced AC control computer (fixes Battery Low problem)
- Steering column bolts recall
- Replaced valve covers and ground off post allowing cover to seal

There might be a couple more that I can't remember. Paperwork from the dealer is being sent my way next week, so I'll re-check the list then.

I'm not blessed with much information on this topic, but apparently at least some of the 2002 cars were equipped with a clutch that doesn't hold up as long as desired (or is noisier than owners would like). A newer design was created by Maser and they offer a no-charge retrofit for all cars under warranty.

My guess is that the newer design uses dual springs for quieter operation and less 'jolting' as the clutch is engaged. That's truly a guess on my part.

On the topic of a new NIT...

My wife and I rented a Spyder in vegas a month or so ago. Loved the car. Hated the fact that the radio always turned on when the car started reguardless if it was on or off when the car was shut off.
Is there a patch available to fix this?

New NIT Module

My main complaint with the radio is that when you turn the engine off (not the electrics) the radio turns off and requires a system restart by turning the key fully to the off position and then back on again - a real pain if you are listening to something interesting and turn off the engine as it takes what feels like an eternity to go on again. Of course it could just be my car?

On our 2002 (with NIT update), the radio turns back on once the NIT initializes. Takes a while (perhaps 20 seconds), but it does come on without any manual intervention.

One new feature I discovered is that you can input new destinations while driving.

Two quirks that I noticed though is:
(1) the info center does not turn itself automatically off when I kill the ignition. It says it'll stay on for another 20 minutes or so and I have to turn it off manually.
(2) when I turn off the nav by pushing 'stop navigation', the next time I start the car, the nav is turned on again.

Any of the two happened to you guys? Any known fixes? My dealer is trying to call Maserati to see what they suggest since he said that other cars did not have these problems.

I have still not figured out how to shut off my Nav on a consistent basis, I click on the start/stop Nav and sometimes it shuts off and other time it doesn't till I repeat a couple times. And this is on a March 04 build with no software upgrades. Not a big enough problem to bring in now but will have it checked out when i bring in for service next spring. Mine also will stay on for 20 min but that is normal. Must be to keep Nav active if you are just stopping for a short time

The Stop Nav function only stops it temporarily... like until you start the car again. You need to use the delete destination function to really stop it. This way the unit will also actually turn off without the 20 min. delay when you turn off the car.

I know this because I was reading my manual yesterday trying to figure out how to make the Nav direction voice work. Mine is silent. The Nav mute key in not muted. I believe it is because I dont have the set up disk which is necessary to install a language. Did anyone get this disk with the map set ?

There is setup program. Here is a copy of something I posted earlier for someone trying to change temperature from C to F. There was also Nav control setup on that screen I am not near my car so cannot check now.


"I looked in my manual and could not find so went out and played with car and found how to do. 1st push the main page button (the one that has main over dark), then push that mouse control button then you will see a setup and configuration screen click the config and you will see temprature setup and just change to F."

I did that and found my Nav language is set to Italian. Attempting to change to English the system asks for a Set Up disk, which I dont have. I am not sure but I suspect the Navtech data disk does not have Italian on the disk for North America/California and that is why my Nav system does not speak directions.
