I mounted the V1 radar detector today. I didn't like the visor mount. Too high up and it sits at an angle so I didn't trust the coverage (besides my wife and I use our visors). So I used the suction cup mount. I mounted it high and to the left of the rearview mirror. It is in the way of the visor but the visor does open sufficiently to block the sun, just not all the way into the windshield. I wired it with a very short cable into the overhead light console so there are no visible wires. The overhead console does not provide switched power so I have to remember to turn it off when not in use. Kind of a pain but a good habit to get into. The detector is nearly invisible inside and outside the car. Very cool!

Mine was just below the rearview mirror, hardwired into a switched connection. Worked like a charm and paid for itself several times over. I think you might get better coverage keeping the unit more centered on the windshield. It also was easy to view the alerts, and the V1 gave good visual indications of direction, strength, and number of signals detected.

Thanks for all of the interest! My camera's battery bit the big one. I'll go to Fry's today and buy a new one. Pics in the next day or two. Having to remember to turn the thing on and off is a pain in the butt but you can't beat the clean install!

Any luck on the pics? I'm interested in the set up as well. Also, has anyone stepped into the laser jammer arena?

Ditto. Same install and visors are useable.
Good exposure front and rear. Saved me many times over.

Finally escaped from O'Hare today, unfortunately my luggage is enjoying an extended stay in Chicago.

During the wait, I picked up a copy of Automobile. In addition to a Comparo of the AMG 63, S8 and QP Auto, there's an article about using a Continental GTC to beat FedEx in delivering a package from NYC to Miami.

Describes laser jammers, V1 (dual copies in case once should be confiscated in VA), gyro stabilized binocs for daytime cop spotting, nite scopes for nighttime cop spotting, dual Garmins for figuring average speed.

Pretty funny article and they managed to do NYC to Miami in 18 hrs and beat FedEx by a wide margin.

I tried both locations and find where I have it is barely noticeable from outside (and inside) the car (check the pics ). Really minimizes the crash-and-grab instinct someone might have seeing a $500 radar detector in plain sight. As far as coverage is concerned, seems to work as well as the one I had mounted in the middle of the windsheild on the Viper.

guys, i can't believe you would settle for that on your vehicles... it reminds me of the bimmer owners.... V1 does this and that... It doesn't, every V1 customer 2 years ago got a ticket, and that had to be at least 18 of them. I went to the passport srx/escort.... and same damn thing but cut it down to about 5 customers a year. Went to K-40, and in the past 3 years of K-40 (did some when I had the other lines but wasn't exclusive to it) and i have had 1 customer out of about 86 units get a speeding ticket. A NFL player who had it turned off. And K-40 still paid the ticket for him...

2 blue LED's in the dash vs the monstrosity of a box on the windshield...

or we can say,

an active countermeasure device vs a ticket confirmation unit ;)

I use K-40 undetectables exculsivly in my vehicles (usually with laser diffusers as well) and have never recieved a ticket in a vehicle equipped with a K40 system...plus you can hide the LEDs anywhere...I will snap a few shots of different installs this weekend

I have had a K40 system in my QP for two years plus. The installation is elegant and it works fine. However, I've gotten three speeding tickets. Two were laser. K40 did reimburse me for one of them. I've taken the car in twice to have everything reviewed and tested to be sure its all working right. Most independent tests and my personal experience suggests that the K40 laser set up doesn't work very well.

The radar portion of the K40 works okay but is inferior to the V1. I have had both the K40 and a V1 in the car for about a year now. And both are on whenever the car moves. The V1 responds to fewer false X band alerts, goes off before the K40 in response to a real threat, often long before. And the laser detection portion is far more effective.

I wanted to believe the K40 was the best around and all I needed with its elegant invisible installation - but it just ain't so.

Yep, same thing the dealer that sold me my K40 system told me. You guys go to the same sales school? By the way, how is it you know that there was only one ticket among your 86 customers and the other statistics you quote?

Love the Arrows

Say what u will.. the V1 is awesome. The thing is, u have to slow down when the radar says there's a cop, not start looking around at 90 MPH untill u find it yourself.

The arrows are super!

I build relationships with my clientele, not in and out of the door slam bam thank you man

and we test everything while it is here... our relationship with the police dept is great... any other questions? i would assume your installation was wrong, or you are ignoring the warnings.

Never had a K-40, but went through BEL, Escort, Uniden, and Cobra before biting the bullet and getting a V1. Got tickets with each of the other units and never been caught with a V1.

On another tack, I've been driving back and forth to the city a lot on 280 recently, and I've noticed a LOT of K band alerts coming from behind, with no "front" warnings beforehand. anyone know if some of the "active braking systems" use K band radar to work?
