Hello,

here in Germany Maserati has a called 1768 Car back to fix sever problems with the suspension. Essentially the cars could loose a front wheel.

Here the German text:

Wegen Problemen mit der Radaufhängung ruft Maserati in Deutschland 1.768 Fahrzeuge der Typen Quattroporte und Gran Turismo in die Werkstatt. Betroffen sind auch zehn Alfa Romeo 8c, die mit den Maserati-Modellen technisch eng verwandt sind.

Are there the same problems in the US?

Greetings from Germany,

Guenter - do you know which production years this affects? I don't read German but, I can see the QP and the GT in the text but, not the GS or Coupes. Reason I ask, is that a friend had his driver-side front wheel come off during a track day this summer. Otherwise, I have not heard of this in the US.
Hi,

here is the complete text:
Schwere Probleme

Big problems
Recall action by Maserati.

Because of problems with the suspension Maseratis recalls 1768 cars (Quattroporte and Gran Tourismo)in Germany. Affected are also 10 Alfa Romeo 8c, which are technically closely related to the Maseratis.

Cars produced between 2005 and June 2008 my have a faulty bolting of the suspension which may lead to loosening of the suspension, in extreme cases the wheel may collaps inwards.

Owners of the cars in Germany will be informed by Maserati and the Kraftfahrt Bundesamt.

Sorry for my rusty English

Yes Vincenzo, I saw some BMW's whose wheels were not torqued enough come loose during a track event with the club always torque the wheels!
Same recall in Hong Kong

Same recall to my 2008 QP GT-S, description as follow:
"This check is required as the ball joint fastening nuts of the suspension arms may have not been correctly tightened to specification.
This may have caused the nuts to loosen with consequent steering wheel vibration, a growing metallic noise and progressive loss of driving precision during manoeuvres.
Continued use of the vehicle in these conditions may lead to damage of the suspension lever, which in the long term and depending on vehicle usage, may cause the lever to break."
I called for an appointment but it has to be sometime in February because of the Chinese New Year holiday. ... have to drive slowly during this period.

I'll definitely check that from here out. Cost my pal about $16K in repairs.
We have the same recall in the US for the QP and GT:

Make: MASERATI Model: QUATTROPORTES
Model Year: 2005
Manufacturer: MASERATI NORTH AMERICA, INC. Mfr's Report Date: JAN 06, 2009
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V001000 N/A
NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
Potential Number of Units Affected: 7912

Summary: MASERATI IS RECALLING 7,912 MY 2008 GRAN TURISMO, QUATTROPORTE, AND ALFA ROMEO VEHICLES. INCORRECTLY TORQUED UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINT NUTS MAY CAUSE THE BALL JOINT NUTS TO LOOSEN.

Consequence: IN TIME, THIS COULD LEAD TO NOISE, STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION, AND FAILURE OF THE BALL JOINT STUD RESULTING IN DAMAGE OR SEPARATION OF THE SUSPENSION ARM. THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CAPABILITY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TORQUE OF THE FRONT/REAR UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINT NUTS AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE SUSPENSION ARMS AND HUB CARRIER. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING FEBRUARY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MASERATI AT 1-201-816-2600.

Notes: MASERATI RECALL NO. 183. CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Does this apply to all 2008 Granturisimos, as I am buying one here in the USA, a used one with 1,125 miles?

Here is the recall note in the UK - appears only to apply to QP and GT models:

looks like it depends on manufacture date, i would check when your GT was made, if before June, it may need the recall repair.
correct torque for 2008 recall?

Does anybody know the correct torque for the front and rear suspension upper and lower ball joint nuts (2008 Maserati Quattroporte)? The dealer is not especially convenient to my location and I would like to check the torque myself.
Don't know the correct torque, but it's more than just that. I understand that they will check for ball joint ware and if there is any, they replace the ball joints. If not, they just retorque.
The car will go to the dealer. But, it's a long way to the dealer for me. I just want to check the torque on the nuts to see if there is any urgency or if the car is safe to drive. This is easily done with a torque wrench if the specs are known.
Alignment affected?

Presumably if only the torque requires adjusting there is no need, but if any of the components are replaced, does an alignment also have to be performed?
