A good friend of mine might be trading in a Ferrari 348TB for a Maser Coupe 6spd next summer season and we were wondering how it compares in straight line speed to an e46 M3, i know they have similar quartermile times, and has anybody had a go with the new Audi RS4.

Thanks for all replies. Feel free to post some other interesting encounters or races.

Hypothetically, every time a M3 tries to play when we are on the freeway, it gets smoked.

Hypothetically, only when its empty (dont risk other's lives)

Probably a better comparison to the new M3. A buddy of mine just got an RS4 and loves it, and he's driven just about every sports sedan and sports coupe out there.

A four door M3 is going to be a really, really interesting vehicle when it follows the new M3 in another year or so...

Safety first always!........thats what we were thinking, on paper they have similar times, but the extra grunt and torque from the V8 should give it the edge over 100mph.......would love to see a coupe vs rs4

That ones easy

I have a E46 M3, only mod is its chiped. The maserati coupe feels faster strait line, i have a feeling the M would smoke the coupe in the corners. i didnt get a chance to really check how the maser does in the corners for myself though so cant really do anything but speculate.

Verry comparable, throttle response is better in the M3, but thats mainly due to having been moded. torque is of course better in the maser.

What i would really like to know, is the maser capable of walking the dog like the m3? there is nothing like sideways tire shredding action. in a closed course of course... safty first...

We have raced both many times, the maser will pull the E46 M3 with Masi torque. The difference is very noticable when chipped where the Masi torque comes on very quick.

my m3 feels slow off the line compared the 2002-2005 maserati. the m3 lacks torque and can be fat (mine is as it is a vert and has bigger wheels etc)

4200CC smokes even the CSL on the straight line, tested last spring
on the german autobahn. thanks to V8 and torque....

In Pure Acceleration...

From a moving start or standing start, I have yet to be beat by any BMW, including the M5 and M6.

Here in Denver I often end up with someone trying to see if my 2002 coupe has any power on north bound I-25. My Maser has eaten all the Vettes that have tried, all Mustangs that have tried including a new super snake that went to 100 mph and wanted no more, all the Dodge SRT-8's that have tried, a BMW M5, M6, and all BMW M3's....

I am sure there are quicker cars out there but I haven't found them yet.

I have met my match once so far, the on ramp to I-25 southbound on 136th avenue, the Ferrari F-430 that was behind me, ended up far in front of me by the time we hit the freeway...

I am sure the M3 corners better than my Maserati, but after I put on the new springs from formula dynamics this winter, that will no longer be the case....
The new BMW M3 V8 might be a challenger, but after a ECU upgrade, won't have to worry about it either...

As I said in my previous post.... This is from the tangle with the M6 post...

On a Greek highway i was cruising around 110mph passing loaded trucks and vehicles, while i saw the flash of the lights of a red 6 series BMW.
Saw better, recognized the mirrors (Ooops M6 time to play).
Indead double exhausts, angry sound, M6 badge, yes it is one!
Still throttle, step right, let M6 pass (speed around 130mph), downshift 5th gear, full throttle, the chase begins.
NOT AT ANY MOMENT THE M6 MANAGED TO GET AWAY FROM ME.
I WAS ONLY 3ft AWAY FROM HER EXHAUSTS ALL THE TIME!!!!
AS SOON AS I REACHED 160mph, M6 STEPS ASIDE, LET ME PASS AND GAVE UP SPEEDING.
I TOOK MY FOOT UP ONLY WHEN I REACHED 180mph, AND OFCOURSE NO M6 AROUND!
NOTHING LIKE A NICE BREED ITALIAN STALION!

The M3, M5 and M6 are heavy cars, that's why their 0 - 60 times are slow. Power to weight ratio is where it's at, always has been, always will be. If cylinders and horsepower were all it was, my brothers Dodge diesel pickup would be whipping all our cars...

yes...the massive torque...

the two are essensially different, why compare. all M powered cars are precisely tuned and corner way way better than the maser.

Z06 vs. Maser...well maser loses.
