Hi Guys (and gals)
New here.
Looking for a 06 Maserati GS. Found a few with around 5k on them...asking in the $50s...Cars are almost identical. Over the phone, it seems that the sellers (private and dealers) will sell them in the high 40s-low $50s.
The leader is a 06 LE...dealer owned. 6k on the odo. Sales manager said its ours for $49. Car is silver, which is not our first choice.
So, please offer input as to what I should be paying for one of these beasts...any help would be great. I can see the asking prices from ebay/ Cars.com etc...what is a realistic selling price? We obviously want to get a great price....(nothing new there!)

Can you be more specific on each of these cars? i.e. options, color, full leather, warranty left, etc.. etc.
These things play a big factor in how desirable they may be.
Provide links if possible, and I'm sure we can be of more help.

Hi,
Thanks for your help....

The dealers has no link and the private is a lead from another dealer!
Anyway, 06 GS LE. 7k. Silver/ black. As far as options go...not really sure. The MSRP was in the $115k range if I recall. I think this one would sell for $49. 1 year left on the warranty.
Car 2....06 GS. Full leather. Blue/ Tan. 5k..close to 6k. MSRP was $110k. Private owner would take..I am guessing...$49-50k. 1 year left on the warranty.

Honestly, I feel (a little) bad for both sellers considering the stupid depreciation these cars have suffered. But, I dont want to overpay.

Ideas?

1st question- Are you sure the LE is in fact an LE? I have seen a few private and dealers list their cars as LE's when in fact they are not.

If the LE is an LE with 1 year or better warranty left and 7k miles, 49k would be a steal i.m.o.

Actually, now that I think about it, either of these would be GREAT buys even in the low 50k range.
Under 50k would be one hell of a bargain..... as long as both cars checked out clean.

There are plenty of cars for sale right now, don't buy one with a color that's not "your first choice" just because it's a good deal. You're going to be looking at that car for a while, pick the color you want, your first choice.

Thanks guys.
That helps.
So, bottom line....nice car....clean PPI...low $50s is the right money?

Also, what do you anticipate the fully depreciated value of these cars to be?

Wife and I have no vices..other than cars. We have been on the wrong end of depreciation too many times. Idea with buying this would be..incredible car, 50% off.. always loved these things. Wife's dream ride.

Seeing the 02-03's in the low $30s. You guys think that these GSs will bottom out in the same range? Crystal ball predictions?

Again, thanks guys.

No telling where the bottom is with this economy. Seems that the high line cars are seeing the worst of all.
I do think they may continue to drop a bit more through winter, but hopefully rebound a bit come spring time.

we have a 08 550 SL (leased thank God)
Get this....sticker $110. Paid $89 (new). They discounted it that much.
24 Month lease. Residual $63.
Called the dealer...asked what the current market value was....$61k wholesale.
Dealer told me that he is guessing our SL will be worth maybe $40k off lease...this time next year.
So, from a MSRP of $110 to $40ish in less than 36 months.
THAT IS NUTS.

Anyway, this Maserati would be cash. And not a biz car. Thats why the deprecation matters more.

So, all in you guys think $50-51 is the OK or should I look harder and negotiate more?

Certainly these cars are worth more what the current market values but given the economic climate and the nature of these cars (high maintenance costs, exotic, questionable practicality, etc.) it shouldn't be unexpected that these cars are taking excessive depreciation hits. I sold my Lotus last summer before things got really bad with the intention of finding an 06 GranSport and I've been watching the used exotic market tumble ever since. Just spend some time over on the FerrariChat board and you'll see the same thing with Ferraris.

Average prices for 06 GranSports at Manheim are in the mid $40Ks. I think, with some aggressive negotiating, a good condition 06 can be had in this market for the low-to-mid $50K range. Your mileage may vary.

BTW, if you pass on the Grigio (Silver) LE, let me know. I would possibly be interested in that car.

thanks for the wholesale numbers and your encouragement...
If you want to see scary/ stupid insane depreciation numbers. Check out 06-07 Lamb Gallardo prices.
MSRP on those bad boys...$230-250k.
Now, 06s with little to no miles are selling for $120s..asking $130s.
THAT is staggering.
A almost new 08 can be had for $165!
Have you seen the F430 prices? 05s with a MSRP of $190 ish are now selling in the $130s.
Anyway, I tool have been watching the incredible depreciation of all assets.
Great time to have cash...except if real inflation hits and the dollar tanks..then we are trading beads and shells!
Anyway, thanks...
anyone else want to chime in?

Steve, Just Purchased 2 Months Ago Still Awaiting Delivery An 06 Gs Anniv Blu 700 Miles For 65k Seems Like A Lot These Days But The Car Is Brand New Had It Inspected By Kerry From Mie For $100 Dollars In Seattle. I'm In Philly They Are Snowbound There. I Would Get These Cars Checked Out A Lot Of Them Were Repainted Or Hit. Talked To One Guy With 4700 Miles On His From Calif. For 55k Told Me He Drives In Auto All The Time He May Need A Clutch Soon That 5k, Sent One Car Back To The Dealer Because Of Paint Issues Never Disclosed. I Would Always Step Up And Pay More For A Car With No Issues. Do Not Even Trust The Dealers Except Algar.

06 Qp Sport
06 Gs Spyder
06 Gs Coupe (incoming From Seattle)

Didnt know about the added clutch wear from driving the car in auto mode...that was golden. Thanks!
Major services on these cars....how often and how much.
The engine is the same as a 360 and I know the majors on that one are big bucks...Maserati the same?

Wow...thanks a ton for posting that info...
You guys totally rock!

Closing in on one now. Just requested to have the car inspected....clutch wear etc.

The price differences on the wholesale level are amazing. I am sure that has to do with condition etc.

Hey, since I don't have access to the Manheim auction results I have a question: Does the "lease" mean it was a previously leased car turned in? And what does the yes and no mean at the end? Just curious. Thanks for the great auction info!

My understanding is that the "lease" means that it was a car previously leased that is being auctioned by the leasing company. The yes/no just tells you if that particular vehicle was part of a sample used to determine average market values.

Below and average are about condition...correct?
Yes. On the Manheim site, there is actually a condition report and they rate the cars on a scale from 0 to 5 in one tenth increments. Above, average and below are just points this scale. The condition reports also include data on the tire tread level, interior condition, blemishes and any repair that may be needed (paintless dent repair, unacceptable previous bodywork, scratches, mechanical issues, etc.).

I'm not a dealer but I've done a fair amount of digging into auctions. The information is incredibly useful when buying used cars. For example, with new cars, you can find the invoice so you kinda know dealer cost and can negotiate accordingly. With used cars the Manheim information can be used as average wholesale pricing to help negotiate deals or sometimes you can find exactly what a dealer paid for a car if they bought it at auction. This obviously helps negotiating positions for buyers.
