Hello,

Could somebody tell me what the average lifespan of 1/ Clutch and 2/ cambelt in GS w/ CC gearbox is?

Nearly finalizing my deal on the GS but I need to know these inevtable maintenance costs. For this prospect, checked that its clutch has still got 70% lifetime while it has a new cambelt, when should I replace all these if the GS is driven for 5,000km / year.

Many thanks,

clutch is directly related to driving habits, i have 25k on my car and all looks well. i think i have read some people have gone to 30+ on it

cam belt?.. we don't have cam belts in our car man. we only have a drive/accessories belt (they last about 2 - 3 years), this engine is chain driven (Ala BMW) so no belts sorry:D

Many thanks willie! The salesman misled me then! BTW, what sorts of electronic problems occur in GS or Coupe usually? Can they be fixed easily?

Thanks!

well,

keep in mind that Italian's are not the greatest electricians, but i haven't had any major problems. if you are getting a GS or coupe CC then the F1 pump is the main concern. the relay tends to die and as a result the F1 pump burns out.

some guy here replace the relay every year just to be on the safe side. the other thing is the car battery, it is really crappy and i would be a good idea to change it for a optima when it dies.

Thank you man. After struggling for almost a month, I ruled out the 997 and 360 and go for a GS this afternoon ... so excited!

clutches

Per my records, my car had a clutch at 15,000 and is in the shop for another one now plus flywheel at 29,000 along with the 30000 mile service. At the rate I drive, I'll need another clutch in about 5 years! The service advisor says not to change the relay because "the F1 pump has a finite service life" irregardless of the relay failing so replacement is inevitable.

Also the heater core leaked onto some electronics forcing the airbag idiot light to short in the on position. Car is in the hospital now for about a week and the rental jeep is a pathetic substitute. I miss my Mas!

PS - servicing the Maserati is very very very expensive at the dealership. When the warranty is up, I'm looking for an independant for certain.

Total BS.

Of course mechanical/hydraulic/electric things DO FAIL at some stage, the only issue is that the MTBF of the relay is MUCH SHORTER than the one for the pump. Even then, that spare costs nothing relative to the full pump, takes no-time to replace, and even if the pump goes the following day it is worth the expense and time (which, again, is peanuts).

But guess a money making cow is taken away from stealerships whenever people do this sort of preventive maintenance...

Not on the markup on the spare (in itself expensive) but on labor.

How was this determined? I have an airbag light on, and I thought I smelled a bit of antifreeze in the cabin lately. Wonder if this happened to me as well?....

antifreeze/washer fluid smell

Are you sure that the antifreeze smell is actually antifreeze and not windscreen washer fluid? On my other cars the windscreen washer fluid gives off a nice smell for a short time as it filters down the hotter regions under the windscreen.

BTW I once got a lot of windscreen washer fluid leak. I took off the wheel and wheel housing covers (plastic) and used the intensive function and turned out that the rubber hose end cap had come off (design flaw) I placed a screw and capped it off with a jubilee clip and fixed it. It appears that the pressure was too high.

its the mechanic who found the coolant leak from the heater/evaporator core itself. That leak peed on the electronics that lit the airbag idiot light. I got a coolant smell anytime the a/c on and the temp was anything other than max cold. just a few ticks toward the red dot from the blue would make the smell. I didn't smell it on max cold at all. I didn't make a connection between the two (smell and airbag light) at all, just mentioned both problems to the advisor. The entire dash has to be r&r to change the evap/heater core. don't even know if the part is in the US or has to come from overseas. I told him (the service advisor) it better not rattle when he's done! I was hoping to do some speakers and dynamat this weekend, but I don't think the car will be done by then. Also Maserati may not cover any more rental car days despite this being a warranty issue.

My 2003 Spyder had these two problems with only 21K miles. Easily fixed too.
We have replaced the clutch after 13k miles.
Strange thing too, a beeping noise comes on sometimes in 1st gear only, never anyother gear. Mostly when in stop n go traffic. Anyone got an idea about saving the clutch & the beeping noise???
Thanks, Dan

Does changing the relay apply to the manual Duo Select transmission in the Quattoporte?

car will also beep if you accidentally hit the downshift when in first - it engages a "special parking maneuver mode" which is self cancelling as the revges rise. the gear indicator will also flash while in this mode.

Where it that relay placed in the car? Can anyone show a picture of the location and/or the relay itself? Also, is there a wiring diagram to be had?, model and where to obtain? It sounds like we all should be helping each other out with this and share the results. MNA might not like for us to save our clutches, but I believe we all do here on the forum. My 2 cents!

Dan, the beeping noise is actually telling you the Cambiocorsa system is getting too hot. it occurs with lots of city, stop and go driving. I used to have the same problem, what i did was attempt to get out of traffic, and also get the car into a gear other than 1st.
