Yesterday, I ve gone and visit the "salon de l'automobile 2008".

The Maserati stand was very quiet, so I could speak a while with my dealer about the new grantourismo Spyder.

He told me, it should be ready for the Mondial, but they are late.....Why...

About the car itself, I ve learned that it should be ready for 2010 (so late), it would be a four seats car and the roof would be soft (not as the California).

I m sad, I have to wait two years more for my brend new car

They are late because they had to start the design process over after the California was hijacked by Ferrari. It originally was supposed to have been a Maserati.

I believe they are holding off so as not to launch into a bad economy. General feeling in Europe is that things will start to improve in late 2009 so a 2010 launch makes more sense.

It makes sense to hold off for a hoped for economic recovery. A 2009 launch may harm residuals on the GranTurismo if owners traded into the convertible and the market was suddenly awash with more used GT's than it was willing to buy thus forcing values down. That wouldn't be good for longer term repeat business for Maserati. A lot of manufacturers are cutting back on supply for next year to help protect residuals for the longer term and prevent discount selling of unsold new stock.

I don't think it has so much to do with market timing as it just takes Maserati a long time to develop anything. Look how long it took for them to put an Automatic in the QP! They are also taking extra long with every new car now to make sure that they don't suffer from the quality problems that everybody (unfortunately) still associates with Maserati. Maserati has to be that much more reliable than the next guy just to compensate for the bad reputation they built for themselves in the first 90 years! At least now the cars are fantastic and as reliable as any German car, to say the least. If we have to wait a little longer for the GT-C, it will be that much better when it arrives.

Agree, Maserati has gotten much better but part of it is beacuse BMW and Mercedes have gone south fast. The worse car I have owned this century was a BMW M5.

I wholeheartedly agree on the holdback due the economy. Here in the States, I've heard some rumblings that the Ferrari California may not hit us until very late 2009, a year after its launch. GM just revealed that they're holding back any redos on the Corvette due the economy, unfortunately the timing flat out stinks to launch great cars.
