I read online that engine covers keep debris out but that seems to be the only thing it does. If I routinely clean my car is it necessary to have on at all? What are your thoughts?

I would say it's not necessary. Having plastic engine covers to hide the messy bits is a somewhat modern addition. Until about 20 years ago it wasn't really a thing. But I don't see much point in removing it either.

It helps with noise reduction, vibration, paint protection, preventing your bonnets paint from being damaged, cooling effect so yes it is needed.
