MY dealer is far away and the car is not in warranty; would you use a well recommended shop or not?

I would have no problem in doing that for oil changes, brake jobs etc.

I would use the dealer for anything that would require OEM parts in the repair.

I concur. Standard maintenance, e.g. brakes, oil, etc. can be handled by a competent mechanic. In my experience most independent shops will decline to work on any car they consider exotic. I've also found that the independent shops that do work on the higher end vehicles aren't less expensive and they often lack the proprietary software for troubleshooting certain problems. If your dealer is too far away you still probably need someone local who can handle small problems. No one advertises themselves as an independent "Maserati specialist," so I suggest that you put a post on Ferrarichat or similar Ferrari listserv to find a local Ferrari tech.
