The CC is a manual transmission with a robotic shifter and clutch, made by Graziano (same mfg for Ferrari, Aston Martin, etc).

Porsche's tiptronic and many other paddle shifted cars are conventional automatics with torque converters. You have less direct control of the engine's connection to the wheels, just like any torque-converter automatic. But you get great acceleration off the line without drama because of the converter.

BMW's SMG is a different implementation of a manual transmission with a robotic shifter and clutch.
