I picked up a quattroporte couple months ago, did a fresh oil change, checked all fluids, gear oil etc etc and I decided to take it out today since it was sitting for a week in the garage. In the morning it was fine, drove over 40 miles, parked it for about 2 hours, start it and a bunch of whit smoke came out and went away, drove it for 20 miles, parked it for an hour, start it and crazy amount of white smoke that took a bit till it cleared out. Took it home, and check the oil which it was changed 200 miles ago, and it’s milky white... is it the head gasket? Oil cooler problems? Or is it like how German cars in the cold they get milky? Any openions? Greatly appreciated..

Well it it is the head gasket I think it'd be the first one I've heard of. But it does rather sound like it. What's your coolant like?

Oil that is "milky white" is not good. If coolant is indeed getting into the oil system, then the coolant level should go down, while the oil level goes up. Was the oil level checked per the factory recommended method (Engine warm, wait 5 minutes, etc)...?

Just an update, started it today smoked a very tiny bit, checked the smell and it was just strong gas smell. No burn smell or sweet smell or anything. Checked the oil again after warming for 5 mins and very minimal white in the oil. Just at the very bottom of the dipstick. Not sure what’s going on, but will have a pro look at it and keep you guys posted.

It may be a problem with the water / oil pump that is letting coolant into the oil system? (they are combined)

Are they combined on the QP as well? I know there have been some issues seen on the Coupe which, in most cases, has been diagnosed post engine implosion :(

I’ve had the combined oil and water pump apart and there are seals on each system with a weep hole in the “dry” shaft space between them. So I can’t say it didn’t happen there, but it seems unlikely.
The weep hole would have to be blocked for pressure to force water into the oil pump.
Sorry for the situation you are in. Hope you get it resolved.

Yes, they are combined on the early QP's, we've seen at least one case of a failure. It really needs to go to a shop for diagnosis.

Assuming the weep holes on each end of the water pump get clogged it seems possible that coolant gets forced into the oil. Either on the oil pump side or on the chain drive side that takes its rotation off the timing chain inside the oil bath.
There are heat shields, headers and such in the way, but you might be able to fish a coat hanger wire up to the weep holes and make sure they are clear and or dry.
Also worth considering, before deciding to go after the head gasket, is the oil cooler/heat exchanger. I am not familiar with this part, but it appears to be an oil to water exchanger, so any leak there could result in milky oil.

I've seen first hand the milky oil caused by the oil/water pump pump leakage on the QP. But the fact that your car has white smoke sounds like you're getting water into the combustion chamber which is an entirely different animal (sounds like head gasket, although I've never heard of one blow). Under no circumstances am I making a diagnosis, but I'd get that looked at right away. Jms is right, there is an oil cooler which is prone to failure, and cause milky oil when it does, but I still don't believe it can cause the smoke issue.

Thanks for all the responses, really great info! I really don’t think it’s a head gasket... before changing the oil “not too long ago” it was just burnt old oil. I can tell the past owner didn’t keep up with maintenance. There’s leaks around the engine close to the manifolds, oil was low burnt, gear oil was low, steering oil was low etc etc. I’m scheduled next week to get it checked out by a good mechanic, was considering the dealer but I’m sure they will charge an arm and a leg to just look at it.

Hey everyone, so just to keep you updated and have a reference for this post that I had it checked out by the dealer, and they found out the engine oil was overfilled by about a quart, which I guess that could cause issues with it. They said the amount of milky in the oil tank is normal. I guess the weather and the amount of time it sits plays a factor also being over filled will let it sit higher. Drove it and no more smoke! Now I’m tackling the F1 system leak lol

So was the oil actually milky or was the dipstick milky? I know that I got spooked when my dipstick and cap turned very milky on my Mercedes after a long trip. It was caused by the difference in temp leading to condensation on the metal parts (i.e, dipstick tube, cap). I've never seen this on the Maserati but I'm sure it's possible. And, yes, the smoke is a common issue connected to overfilling the sump, not related to the discolored oil.
