I would like to let everyone on the forum know how pleased I am with Formula Dynamics (products and service) and Franz Blam Racing in Atlanta and I heartily recommend both to all of you.
First, a little background. I bought a 2002 Coupe Cambriocorsa new in 2002 and have had it every since. I love the car but about 2 years ago, I decided to update the automobile so I undertook a "refresh" of the Maserati to both use it on the street and the track.
I began the update with some Formula Dynamics parts: first, the ECU module, a BMC filter replacement, and then a Tubi exhaust box. Following that I had the DBW module installed, the sport springs, wheel spacers and performance street brake discs from Formula Dynamics. I also had the entire audio system replaced with a custom faceplate, Kenwood nav, audio, ipod adapter, Sirius satellite system, and speakers. The forum helped me immensely with all of these updates and many of you helped answer my questions, so thank you very much! FYI, the posting of my new audio system are on the forum if you just search for it.
This took me about 1 1/2 years to have all of these done but then I ran across an unexpected problem. I had the "check engine" light come on. Many of you can empathize with me for I searched the forum for a solution to no avail. I finally had Foreign Cars Italia find the issue which was that the front catalytic converters evaporated (obviously a manufacturer's defect).
The interior of the front cats had blown into the rear cats, stopped them up, the oxygen sensor before and after each rear cat and threw the check engine light. The service department in Greensboro, N.C. could not have been better at communicating and honestly dealing with me.
I could not ask them to change the catalytic converters as a primary dealer for it would have to be done with Maserati replacement parts and I was concerned that those parts would end up the same as the original. So I called Jeff Roelands of Formula Dyanamics for help. Jeff recommended Franz Blam Racing in Atlanta to handle this issue for me so I had my car shipped 6 hours to Atlanta. Franz found the interior of the front cats were gone as Foreign Cars Italia had. With Jeff and Franz we decided to replace the exhaust system from the headers/front cats to the Tubi exhaust box with a Larini Sport Cat system and had the oxygen sensors reattached to the new system. Problem solved!
While I had the car in Atlanta, I had Franz take it for about a 30-40 minute session on track at Road Atlanta and have the alignment and suspension optimized for both street and track. Wow, what a difference! I asked Franz what else he would do to further tune the car and he told me unless I wanted to use it on the track exclusively, he would do nothing else. Franz told me the car was "a lot of fun" and "had plenty of power". Does that get some of you excited?
For any of you that follow American LeMans Series racing, the Flying Lizard racing team is a Porsche factory team and guess whose car won the driver's championship this year?
This Coupe' has a lot more torque and horsepower. it handles extremely well, and you can certainly hear that deep rumble. The electronics are now up to date. Now I am working on the exterior and interior of the car to clean it up and get it up to almost show quality. If you saw the car except for the exhaust sound and a car that squats more, you would think it was a stock Maserati but it is far from stock!
So, all of you Maserati aficinados I can heartily recommend Formula Dynamics, Franz Blam Racing, and Foreign Cars Italia. They are all professional, talented, reasonable in price, very consumer centric, and a pleasure to work with. I recommend them all.
