does this mean that it is not safe to keep the car after the expiration of the originial 4 ys warranty?

I don't think it's a danger sign. Some people are looking for a "new" car after 4 years of ownership, others are just constitutionally oppposed to spending any money over what's required for normal maintenance and are opting to replace cars with expiring warranties with ones covered by a warranty.
02's have the minor 'issues' besides the expired warranty.
also, the 03's 04's and even 05's are not that much more expensive.
supply and demand. if you look further you will notice that their prices haven't fallen much more. the depreciation is pretty much bottom out.
i think all these cars are a bargain.
i personally would pick the one with the right color so you can enjoy it.
