I finally broke down and changed my own oil this time around (I usually send the car out to have it serviced).

So how did I do it....

(9) quarts of Q Synthetic 10-40 @ 5.99 ea = "53.91"
(1) Maserati oil filter = "39.86"
(2) crush washers (one aluminum and one brass) @ 1.50 ea = "3.00"
Total = 96.97

Feeling a sense of accomplishment. "Priceless" :D

A little bit of aluminum foil placed over the steering rack just under the oil filter facilitates the clean up process when removing the old oil filter.

I purchased a few oil filters from F/M of Orange County that is probably why the price per unit was less than $40. A local auto supply store had the Quaker State Synthetic oil on sale. The brass and aluminum washers came from the auto supply store. Took the old washers in (while the oil was draining) and had them matched.

Congrats on the oil change... Sure beats some of the dealer prices for an oil change! Also as you said, its a good feeling to get it done yourself.

In contrast, our package runs $150 for Ferrari Oil Filter, 12 qts Q European and crush washers. We use the spec oil from Ferrari / Maserati and that's why it runs a bit more. Just call us up and it ships to your door without having to run around and collect the pieces.

I noted you are using 10-40 not the recommended 5-40. That makes a significant price difference in the oil and may cause problems in cold environments as the 5 indicates the flow characteristics when cold.

Nice job.

What is everyone using to lift the car? Extended car ramps of some sort or jack and stands? If jack, where are you lifting the car to use the jacking points as stand locations?

10/40 oil is not Maserati approved

10/40 Q Power or Q Torque oils are not European ACEA A3/B4-02 Approved. Only Quaker State European Engine 5/40 Full Synthetic oil is. The oils are made using very different methods and do not come from the same base oils. A 5/30 European oil is coming to market soon, and will replace 5/40 in the coming months. 10/60 European synthetic is a known in the industry as a "Bandaide" oil
that is used to cover engineering goofs ! Ex: ( BMW M3 use Castrol TWS:D 10/60 so they last the warranty)

The car has existing jack points. I have two jacks one for each side of the car. I lift front first, and place 1 ramp under each wheel, then same for the rear.

Guys...

I have posted many items here in regard to oil... Mobil 1 is every bit as good if not better than quaker state.... I use Mobil 1. 0W-40 Full synthetic myself and it is great... Please read this again and see why you are wasting money if you go by the book... Funny thing is that all oil pretty much comes from the same places, maybe a different additive once in a while and the only major thing different is the packaging.. Same goes for batteries! I will post the URL to the oil research here in a moment..

changed oil and filter

Just finished changing my engine oil and filter. I used Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. Bought the o.e Purlux filter and crush washers from the local dealership in Dubai. Cost was about Dhs 270 (about 73$) for 8 litres of oil and Dhs 175 (about 47$) for the filter and washers.

I put in a little over 7 litres at first, started the engine, and added the rest with the engine running and warmed up. Took exactly 8 litres to get the level right. Was fun listening to the strange noises from the mysterious depths of the oil tank, with the cap open and the engine running. Another thing I noticed when draining the oil tank and sump was that it took ages for it to change from a continous thin stream to a drip-drip, if you know what I mean. You need to wait a bit to get all the oil out.

A gearbox oil change is next.

Also, while I was at it, I removed all the plastic covers in the engine bay, I can actually see my engine now !
