Hello everyone,
I'm a new Maserati owner and just purchased a used 2014 QP GTS with 13,000 miles about three weeks ago. The very first day after driving to work, i noticed a large bubble under the leather on the dashboard. I guess the Florida sun was too much for the glue. After the car sat in the garage overnight, the leather cooled and a huge wave appeared. Obviously the used car dealer made a temporary repair that lasted more than 5 minutes or 5 miles.

I called around to a few local upholstery shops and nobody will touch this with a 10 foot pole. The local Maserati dealer said the only option they offer is replacing the entire dashboard. He said he would call me back with the quote, but that was two weeks ago. Has anybody else had a similar experience and if so, how did you solve it?

Sorry to see this. I'm thinking there isn't a quick fix. If your local upholstery shops aren't confident, you may have to surf for a shop that routinely does auto restorations, or exotic rebuilds. That expertise may not be local to you.

Does FL have a lemon law or do you have any recourse with the dealer you purchased from?

There is a place in California that repairs Ferrari dashboards...Google that and see if they can help you out..Not the only brand of car that does this...Jaguar XFs come in all the time with dashboards that look like bacon...Leather dashboards are not a real great idea IMOP...Jason

Surprised nobody locally wants to help fix that but sure as Jason says, there's no reason you can't remove the part and even ship it somewhere that can help!

Yeah my QP V dashboard is mostly a nice sturdy fake leather, but I think the instrument panel cover is real leather, and it is holding up very well. It looks brand new after 14 years and 55,000 miles, plenty of time in the hot sun. This is actually the sturdiest and least aged dashboard I've ever had in a car. My old Porsche ones all cracked like a dry lake bed.

I looked at a 2015 QP a 11/2 years ago. During the test ride I noticed a huge bubble on the dash. The dealer, who was not a Maserati dealer, said he contacted a Mas dealer and was told the dashboard needed to be replaced. Needless to say, I did not buy the car. Since then I have purchased a 2015 QP. When it is warm, I do get a bubble in the middle of the dash (black, so easy to see). However when the AC cools it down it pretty much recedes. I now just assume this is the way it is. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I had this happen on a Jag XF I owned. In the early years of that car, they used a glue only to hold the material to the dash. In the later years, they used a glue and staples. I had bought the car new and it had a great warranty and Jag replaced my dash, which was nice of them. Is your car certified pre-owned (CPO)? If so, you probably have warranty coverage through 2020 and they might replace it under warranty. I bought a CPO 2014 GTS last year and the dealer replaced a door seal for me earlier this year that was like $1,800 to replace. I don't know your mechanical abilities, but if you can get the dash off, you can probably re-glue it or send it out for repair.


Regarding shops not wanting to work on the car--this is part of the Maserati Life. I have a QP and a Spyder and most shops are afraid of the cars--not because they are any harder to work on, but mostly the liability that comes if they damage a part and have to replace it. Even with a shop rate of $160/hr (local dealer rate), you need to work a lot of hours if you break a $2,000 mirror or headlight. I had someone kiss my bumper earlier this year on my QP. $1,800 in repairs and it took 4 weeks to get a simple trunk seal. My QP is my daily driver, so it is a bit inconvenient, but it could be worst. Some poor dude had his GranTurismo at the shop for 8 months because they had to remake his steering wheel from scratch in Italy (among many other problems). The shop told me the total repair bill was $58,000 to rebuild the dude's car. This is part of the brand experience. If my car ever gets in a wreck, I would want them to total it. I won't want it back because it will take 4 months just to get it fixed.

Living in Texas, I've seen a lot of dashes like that on Maseratis that were only 3 or 4 years old. When I was shopping, I paid very close attention to this, among other things, to truly find a car that was garage kept.

2014 QP 🙈is a fancy Chrysler. Worse thing Maserati did was sell there soul to an American company. Further not looking good. Stay far away from any QP between 2014-2017.

I think they're a great buy on the used market. Just know what to look for!

I had/have this issue on my Jaguar XF - it's like a $3k repair.... Looks like shit, bit can't really justify 25% of the car's value to replace the dash.
Sucks....

After calling six different local upholstery shops, I found someone willing to pull the dash and recover. It cost $2,800, but they did a great job and it looks OEM. This is a car I hope to have for a while and 10% of the cars value was worth it to me.

Besides, I could never sell it with that bacon dashboard.

That is not a bad price. There is a very similar problem with leather Corvette dashboards in the C6 versions that had the 4LT (top) trim package.
Mine started to have a minor problem that I knew would get worse based on other owner's experiences so I went to an upholstery shop to get a quote. The lowest I got was $3000 if I removed the dashboard and reinstalled it myself.

Mine started to pull away from the edge by the windshield and the dealer replaced it under warranty. Said they were doing a lot of them per year.

I'm impressed that Maserati was doing then under warranty. Jaguar fought a lot of them and for the most part wouldn't repair them even though it's a common flaw.
The ones that did get repaired under warranty were very much one offs.

I like all the calculus here about "percent of the car's value" to make it look nice. I owned a Porsche 944 that was worth about $5,000 for all 12 years that I owned it, and I routinely spent $2000 or more fixing it up, getting it painted and so on. The car wasn't worth much, but it sure looked good and ran perfectly while I had it, and that was what mattered. A car is not a house, there's no point in thinking about the percentage of value for a repair.
