My 4200 will not start - mechanic diagnosed it as a bad crankshaft sensor...anyone know the part number or where to source a new one or one off of a wreck?

Thank you Catman -

As an update the mechanic wants to try another key. He thinks the crank/no-start condition could be that the key had a sudden internal fault.

Does this even make sense at all?

It makes sense as they will have the same result - crank without start.

But did he scan the car? Crankshaft sensors typically throw a code.

If you need a replacement, try Ferrparts. They stock quite a bit new and used.

If your immobilizer doesn't get the right key code the red LED will flash rapidly on the cluster best I remember...Check your owner's manual....Who is your mechanic? Fixing a no start is not exactly the hardest thing to fix on a car...The steps you take to fix it are kinda text book stuff.....Check for faults, check fuel pressure etc...Just saying....Jason

Is it the red LED? I'd have thought the CODE light on the dash would light (at on UK models)

You haven't got a spare key at all, to validate that.

I'm cautious. It's possible, but doesn't really feel likely.

As normal, I'd go down Jason's route.

The spare key is with me so I'll be able to try it when I return to where the car is Wed.
The mechanic is Ozark Import Specialists in Springdale AR...they seem to be competent.
They are probably right to eliminate the key issue before crankshaft sensor replacement.
Not sure which is going to cost me more though - spare key's are expensive as I recall.
Thanks for the tip on parts sources. I have a call to Jeff at FD as well.

*If* it's the CODE system I don't think you'll need a new key. It's a passive component. Which means, of course, that y9ou won't eliminate potentially, the cause using the spare key.

The antenna is a known weak spot or I *guess* it's vaguely possible the ECU has forgotten one key code. Although it seems unlikely.

I alert them to the CODE antenna as a possibility.
Going to try the spare key anyway.
Car was sitting for a while - battery was good (on a tender).
Not sure what could have gone wrong while the car was dominant.
If the ECU system forgot the code how can it be reprogrammed?
If it is the antenna - what is the approved solution?

My car needed a crank sensor last year. It’s a bitch to replace. You must remove the intake manifold for clearance and then remove the oil pressure sensor. Then at that point you can just barely gain access. I ordered mine from ricambi America and they had it in stock and shipped it immediately. I replaced the oil pressure sensor at the same time because it had failed and was reading 100% oil pressure at all times as is the case with many of these cars.

Was your symptom crank-no-start too?
My oil pressure is usually pegged when driving but down when idle so I think that one is working well.
I'll check ricambi too...again much thanks you for the info. The older these cars get the tougher it is to get anyone who knows how to work on them. I have had several dealers not want to look at the car. I think this independent in Springdale is good so far.

It was the key gone bad.
Surprised that the mechanic was right and I was ignorant enough not to try it before having it towed to him and spending $100.

Now off to figure out how to get a replacement key so I am not stranded when my spare decides to quit.

no -this shop does not have the tools
They surmise that the transponder is bad and I'll have to get another key made at the dealer in Oklahoma City (4 hour drive)...will cost $350 for the key and another $150 for the service or there abouts.

I guess it will be an excuse to spend 8 hours with my coupe.

Seriously these things are a chip in a glass tube. Sure if there's anEMP or you stick in a microwave it'll fry. Stamp on it, maybe stop it working. But just 'go bad' and without the tools to diagnose?

You've not changed the battery in it recently, have you?
