Yesterday I noticed a coolant smell coming from my 04 Cambio, and again this morning. Ambient temp was about 85 and the temp gauge showed 195-198. I checked under the hood and cannot see any leaks, nor are there any spots under the car. I'm not certain what temps the 04s run at-is 195 about right?
I just got the car back from Maserati of Orange where they updated the ECU program and replaced a potentially faulty gas line. Never smelled the coolant smell before. The ECU upgrade made a great improvement in the way the cars shifts!

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

Checked my coolant bottle and the top may have been a little loose. Added about 16 oz of water and tightened the top. We'll see tomorrow.

I smell it whenever the outside temperature approaches my setting. I doubt if, at 4000 miles, the heater core is rotten.

The level doesn't seem to be going down, so I'm not concerned. Something to watch, though.

Double check the garage floor for very small spots, potentially dry by the time you check there. Apparently, there was a bad batch of water pumps which leak very slowly. This is discussed in a previous thread. I too smelled the coolant, but eventually visually confirmed the leak. I went through three pumps, two while the car was still at the dealer. Even if the leak leaves no evidence on the floor, have the dealer check the pump. Good Luck!

Coolant odor

What was the resolution to the problem. I also have a coolant odor in the interior on my '02 Cambio Coupe.

Water pump replacement, but it could be something else. Consult your dealer or mechanic so they can inspect.

Anyone know if there is an upgraded water pump for these cars? I think mine is bad based on small coolant puddle found in garage.

You may want to check the heater core as well.

Hello gentlemen, I would concur with Mr. Formula Dynamics. You can also rub your hand on the carpet in the footwell to see if it’s wet from coolant...

Kindly,
Stephen

Hey guys, since a new water/oil pump assembly is $2000+ new, has anyone tried one of those rebuild kits aval. on ebay for about $400? Thoughts?

Hold up...Really no one has diagnosed the car to figure out where it is leaking...So far we have pulled the dash and installed a 2k$ waterpump..? Just saying....Jason

My bad Jason, I thought since the discussion was about possible leaky water pumps, I would ask if anyone had tried a rebuild, vs. new. Do you think it would be worth the risk?

No worries, but people get on here and next thing you know we are rebuilding the engine in cyber space..I never had to replace the waterpump on a dry sump car. I wouldn't be using anything off Ebay..Just a bunch of junk..Not really for Maserati, but I'm shocked at the amount of knock off timing chain kits for Jaguars and Land Rovers etc..I bought a hose the other day for a Land Rover and they even copied the packing and logos on the packaging....And we know "they" is...No thanks..Jason

Thanks Jason, we value your opinion as you are elbows deep in these things all day. And you still find time to keep us straight on all things Maserati. Thanks (I mean it), the community here is one reason I came back to the darkside and bought another Mas.
