Frequently when I park my car, set the handbrake and then turn it off, I get a loud "thunk" from somewhere in the motor bay as the motor stops. It doesn't happen everytime and I can't replicate it under any certain conditions, just randomly about 1/3 of the time.

It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side, under the hood. It happens if I turn it off in 1st gear, as well as if I turn it off in N.

I suppose I could get my wife or one of the kids to turn it off while I'm standing there peering into the motor bay hoping to isolate the sound......of course, then it will never happen and they'll last for about 4 minutes before saying they have more important things to do.

So I thought I'd first start by asking if anyone know what is making that noise?
