Small antifreeze leak on floor in garage only after running the heat
Also get a small smell of it inside the cab only when running the heat.
Heater core obviously is bad?

Sounds about right. Super common, if not inevitable on these cars. Good news and bad news. Bad news first, super labor intensive, dash out, job to replace the heater core. Good news. Super simple to bypass in 5 minutes for practically free.

Ok how can I bypass it for now so it doesn’t blow on me?
Or should I even worry about that since it’s only when heat is on.
I can just never turn it on

Definitely worry, the risk is that ultimately it leaks behind the dash, onto the floor, and into the ECM compartment in the passenger floorboard. https://www.maseratilife.com/forums/do-yourself-dyi/54826-maserati-4200-coupe-spyder.html Use that for reference, sucks that the pics are gone, but it's easy enough to figure out. In short, find the heater core inlet and outlet pipes connected to coolant hoses coming out of the firewall. Disconnect both, and use a barbed hose union to connect them, and you're done.

OH MAN> I noticed a faint smell also the last time I pulled mine into the garage? Since I don't drive my cars like this one during the cold wet months sounds like something I need to be thinking about! Thanks for the post and the reply Jlobo941

If you bypass then you get no heat?
Other option is to replace the core - saw that some use SAAB part - is that the approved solution or are there Fiat or Maserati parts that are better?

The part isn't the problem, it's the labor to remove and replace the dash to service the heater core that sucks.

...and yes, you get no heat. My 02 has the heater core bypassed, and has for years. Even on the coldest days (that you'd want to be driving your Maserati in the first place), seat heat, a coat, and rolled up windows are more than sufficient.

Deciding if I want to tackle this job before spring or not
Correct me if I’m wrong.
As long as I don’t run the heat it shouldn’t leak?

Incorrect. Coolant flows through the heater core without regard to heat being on/off.

If you heater core is leaking (it probably is) you can either replace it, roll the dice, or bypass it. There are bypass instructions on the drive, and also on Craig Waterman's (sp??) site.

The smell is not surprising. The heater core sits inside the ductwork. Unless you are actively blowing air over it it may not smell.

The drops on the garage floor I can;t explain. Are you sure that is coolant and not condensate from something?
