Hi,

Let me apologise ahead for Long post.

I just recently joined the forum, however I have been reading around the threads and posts for a while now. I have been thinking about buying used 981 Boxster or Cayman (preferably Boxster as more within my Budget and never had convertible before).

Background : I live in Australia. I have made some profits from my investments and I want to use part of it to buy this.

Why : currently I am driving GLA45. while it is a wonderful car, fast and looks nice, the driving experience leaves me desiring more. I used to drive BMW and I feel like I used to enjoy more driving BMW on a downhill twisty roads. Hence I want to buy something with RWD and good driving experience. Also my GLA45 didn’t had a sport exhaust button so if I wanted to make my exhaust “roar” I ended up breaking up speed limit in my state and all states surrounding my state. 😆 so this time I want to buy NA engine with either 6 or 8 cylinders, so that I can make the engine rev high and enjoy wonderful exhaust note. I checked YouTube videos (I know they can’t be accurate) and it seemed like Maserati granturismo and Porsche do fit into my requirement.

Choices:
1. 2012 Porsche Boxster 46k kilometres $67k - SC package, PSE (private seller and price do not include Govt. Charges, Govt. Charges will put the price around $72k)
2. 2014 Porsche Boxster 41k kilometres $69k - no option included (drive away price from dealer)
2. 2008 Maserati Granturismo 73k kilometres $64k

Now I know Maseratis are known to have “quirks” . Since this is a Maserati forum so I might get biased opinion, but still I wanted opinion from you guys as I am torn between orgasmic exhaust note of Maserati and reliability (and value retention) of Porsche 😩

P.S. my assumption based on sales ad is that Boxster (option 1) will lose approximately $15k over next two years (considering 10k kms per year) and I have budgeted around $10k for repairing in any unlikely even. On the other hand 2008 probably has depreciated fully by now and only gonna lose value based on kilometres added and demand.

Why not test-drive the vehicles of interest and then decide for yourself? No amount of online opinions will truly give you the answer you're looking for. Everybody has different tastes and what they feel is important in their car.

That being said, however, the Porsche Boxster and Maserati GT are two vastly different cars. It's like comparing apples to oranges. The Boxster is a small, nimble, light-weight, sporty 2-seater car, while the GT is a large, heavy, 2+2 sport-luxury cruiser.

If you're used to driving BMW's, you may be disappointed in how the GT drives. Due to the size and weight, handling is slower as well as throttle response. (This is why a test drive is important).

When you choose a Maserati GT, you go in knowing that it's not a sports car (like a Porsche). You choose looks and sound over performance (as well as resale value).

As psb1013 said, they are different cars. I own a 2012 Cayman R and a 2012 QP5 GTS. I love each of them for what they are, but they surely are different. There is no substitute for a test drive and a self-assessment of what you are looking for in this car purchase. Good luck.

Your GLA should be a good deal quicker than either of those Boxsters. If I were you, I'd go an Alpha stage 3 upgrade on your current car and add valved exhaust for $5-6 grand, rather than diving into a slower, entry level P car. That GLA should be a ton of fun with 450hp.

I agree with the comments above, definitely test drive both if you have that option. Personally, I would go with the GT. There's a lot of Boxsters around but you don't see many GT's. Another thing to think about, what's dealer support like where you are for both types of cars?

Thank all for your response. I have scheduled to meet with two private seller to see their cars. One is selling a Boxster and one is selling Maserati, I liked both of them which is why I was here.
@jlobo941 I am not a big fan of tune. I might be illiterate in this matter. But I always believed that the additional performance tunes squeezes out, was left by Engineers as safety margin. But I am no expert, so I am probably wrong.
@BrianGTC I will be buying from private seller. There is one dealer that has a supercar service center. I think he mentioned that he was authorised Ferrari service center, not sure how much of it true. But the service center was working on Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Plus I have also found an Indy Mechanic specialised on Maserati.

How many people walk up to you and proclaim "what a beautiful car!" when you're driving a Mercedes GLA?? It is about as pretty as Trump's butthole, honestly.

I may be in a minority here, but I have never bought a vehicle ( car or motorcycle ) with any consideration for resale value. If new, yes, there is something to be considered, but it is nothing I think about when driving. Since yours appears to be a second hand purchase, most of the depreciation has already been absorbed. These are toys, not appliances and my primary concern is the fun factor. Buy the one that makes you smile.

I imagine about the same amount of people who would roll up to his Boxster in their own Boxster, behind a Boxster, next to another Boxster, on the phone with their wife in her Boxster... it's all subjective, I think the GLA45 is a good looking car, and the Boxster is far too common to be special to me.

Now on to a more pressing matter, how do you know what Trump's butthole looks like? Angry ex tryst perhaps?

You are. The margin is there because when they design and build an engine, they start with it's output. Once the engine is assembled and going through development, it is tuned to the power level that they originally targeted, and then produced, whether it's at 95% of its potential or 50%. As long as you get your tune from a reputable developer, itll be just fine (assuming you don't go all mad scientist with the new power and beat it to death). I'd say a good portion of the Maseratis on this forum have tunes, and I've yet to hear of any negative effects.

"Special" in this case is a subjective term, but the the fact of the matter is that Boxsters outnumber GLA45's on the road 20:1. I'm not sure where you live, but it is what it is. Call your nearest Porsche dealer, and ask how many Boxsters they have in stock. Call MB and ask how many GLA45's they have (if any). Then take into account that they've only been making the GLA45 since 2015, and they've been pumping out relevant Boxsters for three times as long. Another element of "special" in my humble opinion, is the the hand built engine in the GLA is the most powerful 4 cylinder ever produced. I'm not a Porsche, or Boxster hater by any means, I just find it to be a relatively common, entry level car. Your description of the GLA45 as a "Jeep" indicates to me that you've never driven one. That "Jeep" smashes the Nurburgring in 8:11, faster than either of the Boxsters the OP proposed.

I test drove a GLA45 last year and it was a hoot! Very fast and handled as if it was on rails. To me, it is best "hot hatch" out there right now. Better than the Focus RS, Honda Civic Type -R, Golf R, and the Audi RS3. Yeah, it doesn't have the balance of a Cayman or Boxster but it's much more practical and livable all-year round (thanks to AWD).

Those AMG engines are some of the best in the business. Tremendously strong and has gobs of torque. Since Maserati's engine contract with Ferrari is terminated, I would love to see an AMG engine in a future GT-replacement. I recently test-drove the new Aston Martin Vantage with AMG's legendary bi-turbo V8 and it was amazing! Can you imagine a GT with 550+ ft. lbs of torque instead of a puny 384? We can only dream.

BTW for the hell of it, go drive a Stelvio Quadrofoglio and see how quickly you dump the GLA45!!!

Couldn't agree with you more. The day they make an awd Giulia Quadrifoglio I'll buy one. I'm absolutely stunned by both cars, but a six figure rwd is just too impractical for me in Colorado.

Thank you guys for your replies. I will be test driving both of them soon to decide which one suits my taste more.

As for resale value, I tend to change my car every 2-3 years. That’s why I was thinking about resale value. I am not sure about the used market of the Maserati in Australia, so I might have to flip it at the dealer and I know dealer won’t be giving me a great deal on it. 😄

Whichever one I end up buying, I will be selling it after two years and will be buying the other car, if I end up enjoying both test drive.

But beside these two, recently I started have a look at Jaguar F-Type. What is you guys think about Jaguar F-Type V6S? Anyone had or still have one?

Don't have one but think they are a HUGE improvement in the styling dept over the XK. At first glance they appear smaller than the XK but haven't seen them side by side. Both definitely have an Aston like appearance (the XK was designed by the same Chief Designer of some AMs). My wife has an XK and when we pulled the M GTS up to it to compare it, she all of the sudden saw that the XK looked "Dated". We love the XK but it isn't in the same league as our M GTS and now is for sale. Every time I see an F type Jag, I turn my head.

I am considering Jaguar F-Type for its look. I was looking at AM earlier today but couldn’t find any auto transmission in my Budget (I am not very good with manual and I read that AM clutch is heavy). You have a newer Maserati so probably you have good experience with it so far. But everyone I talk to or every forum I go, I have been getting warning about how it will spend most of its time in workshop and I will be spending quite a substantial amount in repair and maintenance fee as I am looking to buy 2008/2009 Maserati GT which is 10 years old car by now.

Can't really speak to reliability in any of the M cars. Just got mine about 6 weeks ago and am still working on fixing a bunch of stuff neglected by previous owners. I bought it as a project knowing it would be a project. I wrench on everything I own and won't be fretting about much except parts prices and electrical bugs ( I don't have a Leo or other high dollar scanner). I think I'm honing in on the main stuff (see thread about tranny fluid in the coolant system) and will hopefully have this car up and running in the next month or two. Last on the list is to go to a dealer and have them clear codes like airbags and anything else I can't do.

If you will be relying on a dealer or other shop to do all of your mechanical work then your concerns are justified. To me the largest expense of owning a high dollar anything, is the labor cost of repairs/upkeep. If you can take that part out of the equation, then you can save an ass-load of $$. That's really the only way we can justify having the toys that we have. The air we personally breathe is not very rare.
