had nothing to do with the US or any regulations. it was simply a
'customer' request, typical buyer's age of those/this cars is around
45 - 50 and considering a Maser as a Gentleman's car (understatement)
those lights where just to 'flashy' and they look for those kind of ppl somehow unserious....

it was also the time when Ferrari took over the brand.

no question - i'd go for the standard Ford Mondeo backlight look ;-)

from what i read, way back when, the car magazine article did mention the redesign of the rear lights is for US DOT compliance. sorry it was a few years back and i dont think i can dig up a reference for you.

I agree. The US DOT specifies a reflector section and a large backup light section the boomerangs don't have. Those are the things that make the North America cars look like they do.

there would have been less expensive ways to fix the DOT issue than
redesigning the full tail.......
