Last Friday I had the perfect opportunity to take a road trip from Seattle to Palm Springs. I have a 2005 Coupe LE -with cruise control and cupholder :)
Prior to the trip I had my 18k service with all fluids changed. I also put on new tires.

The trip down I-5 was great. Heading through the mountain passes in Southern Oregon was a kick as the car had tremendous power uphill. I effortlessly passed semi trucks through winding corners like they were standing still. I found Sport Mode to really be aggressive through the corners, then turned it off when cruising for a much cushier ride.

There was a bit of snow around Northern California, it is Winter after all. The roads were clear on the freeway, yet when I pulled off for fuel there was a bit of snow on the sides of the roads. It had been plowed 8-10 feet high in some places.



I stopped in Sacramento for the night and pushed towards Los Angeles the next day. Enroute I had a Corvette that wanted to play. We slowed and gave it a go a couple of times. He simply could not keep up. When we pulled over for fuel he remarked that he was giving it all she had and I still just walked away. I don't want to say how fast we were going, let's just say it was fast :) Cruising up through the Grapevine was also great fun as I cranked the 1000 watts of after market stereo. Having four 6.5" subwoofers and Focal K2's in the doors sounds so sweet.



My destination, a memorial service in Palm Springs.

Headed back up to Washington. Enroute through Mt Shasta, I had a Hybrid Honda keeping pace when my radar detector went off. I immediately slowed and moved to the slow lane. The Honda wasn't so lucky, the Highway Patrol came out lights blazing and pulled him over. Behind the front grill and on the rear license plate I have a laser shifter. The detector "talks to you" and stated "KA Band", giving me sufficient warning. The amazing thing about the Escort Passport 9500ci is that it is also GPS based so it marks areas where speed traps and photo radar are located. You can download monthly updates through USB. I pulled off at the Mt Shasta exit and there was once again, lots of snow. The trip computer says I averaged 19.1 MPG.




Cruise control was a joy to use. I was amazed at how refined the acceleration and deceleration was. The car just held the speed and was not abrupt and jerky like other cars. Since the radar detector has GPS readout of speed, I noticed that the car's speedometer was off a few MPH at cruising speed. I loved the intuitive interface of the cruise control. Driving uphills with 55mph suggested corners was simply exhilarating. I had the hugest smile on my face. As I gripped the steering wheel and maneuvered around the bends while listening to that sweet exhaust. It just sounds and feels so amazing to downshift and punch it!




Back in Washington, I stopped at friend's new place to stay the night.



2550 miles in 5 days. No issues. A perfect trip. I considered it 2550 miles of "therapy" and loved every minute of it. I got home, kissed the family, petted the family dog then proceeded to hand wash the Coupe. What a great car.

Love ppl who drive their masers! That's what the car was built to do.

Can't wait to get mine from CA to MT this summer.

Beautifully well done! Looks/Sounds like it was an amazing trip. Kudo's to you for enjoying your car the way it was meant to be enjoyed during these cold times. Hard to even get out these days, cant wait for the spring to come!

Ditto, mine's the everyday driver; rain - i drive, snow - i drive, sunshine - i drive more and faster, quick trips to the store - love 'em, the car waiting for me at the airport parking after a long trip, priceless (OK so I park in hourly where it's more spacious and covered even on long trips) - what a sight to see greeting me upon my return, reminds me why I work so hard! longer trips to the beach/ocean...drive drive drive joy joy joy!

Thanks for sharing Guy. Any concerns about using Z rated tires in areas where there was still snow present?

Thanks guys! After staring at the pristine car in the garage for months, it just begged to be driven. And judging from all the fellow motorists giving the thumbs up, the inquiries at the gas station, and from the people that took pictures of her along the way, she didn't want to sit in the garage either - she wanted to be seen! :thumbsup:

After hearing that my Uncle passed away, I just thought...man I don't wanna be that guy that never enjoyed his car. I'm seeing cars for sale with low miles and think of all the people that didn't drive those cars because they didn't want to depreciate the car - the difference in price doesn't seem that dramatic once you get over 10,000 miles. They've gone down enough! So enjoy 'em.

Jon - have you been to Oregon lately? The state where they don't let you pump your own gas! The attendent at the gas station said that he's only seen 2 Maserati's pass through- the last one being black with British Columbia plates with a guy that said, "eh" a lot. That you? :) Regarding the tires, I was nervous when it was 32 degrees at night and I pulled off the Mt Shasta freeway exit. I could see what appeared to be a shiny ice covered surface. I went to turn around and get back on the freeway, but my Fuel light was already on so I just hit the Ice button and drove very slowly and very carefully into town. Thank goodness, it turned out that it wasn't slick at all. I'm sure my Pirelli Rosso's would of hardened and slipped at that temp. But the Vred's still handled. Not sure what I would have done had it been frozen solid.

What is an "ice" button?
See pic attached... best not to engage unless you're in icy or otherwise very slick conditions, as it overrides all other transmission modes (Power/Sport, and also Auto), and also sets a default of starting off in 2nd gear (which is no big deal in & of itself), so that you have less chance of experiencing tire spin in poor-traction conditions. Note that the diagram on the switch indicates individual wheel tracking which disputes the laws of physics... which may be their whole point! LOL

Good day, eh! No, that wasn't me. Actually, I don't think I say "eh" all that often, but when you're a Canadian you really don't notice people saying "eh", so maybe I do say it a lot. I haven't driven the car south of Seattle . . . so far. Thanks for the comments on the temperatures. I have Pirelli Rosso's and, after reading threads on the forum and getting advice from the tire shop, I avoided driving the Maser when temps dropped below 40 around Christmas. I missed out on some sunny days. I will look at Vredstein's next time. Again, thanks form sharing your story. Unfortunate about the circumstances under which you took the drive, but I agree it is a reminder to all of us: life is short, enjoy the drive and more so enjoy it in a Maserati.

Ice Button....Must be related to the cc. My MSP works well in the snow as I found out one day when I got caught in the Sierra in white-out conditions.

No ice button on my GT.

Yep, I wouldn't think there'd be any need for one on a proper manual tranny.

The ice button does also limit the revs so you cant overcook pulling away in either manual or cc , i use mine purely for pulling away once im moving it gets switched off and to be honest i have found both massers far better to control in icy conditions than either of my two mercs ,


Great trip by the way guy content and editing was excellent

I've only driven mine a couple of times in very slick conditions (wouldn't really call them "icy", but it was near-freezing temps, with a mix of snow & freezing rain), and I thought it handled it just fine. You obviously have to adapt your driving to the conditions at hand, but that's the case with any car - unless you want to end up shiny side down on the side of the road.

In those cases, I was more worried more about someone else's vehicle not being able to handle it & piling into mine.

Exact same here, we got a few inches last week, (avalanche conditions for us in Charlotte..lol), the road was covered in snow and ice in the morning and I went out of the comfort of the heated garage driving her slow and steady, it was a lot of fun. Other then a go from a full stop on an incline the car did very well. Even then I just backed it down to level and got a slow running start. I wouldn't want to do it all the time by any means but I was really impressed with how well it handled and it was great fun seeing my part of town in fresh white from the warm cockpit of the Masi. Got lots of looks of cameras, more so then usual, guess Italian black on Carlolina white go well together.

Great Trip - Congrats!

I am thinking about a Chicago to Cincy run in the near future, about 700 miles round trip, but maybe I'll just run it out to NYC as well!

As for the winter, this is my first year with Blizzak LM-25. They really are great in the cold and snow of Chicago. I do recommend the winter tire/wheel option for those of us in the snow climate.

Even if you are not looking for snow, it just adds confidence for taking longer trips.
