Hi everyone, I've done lot of research on the potential variator issues, phoned several specialists and am constantly back and forth between proceeding to buy this car and not depending on various advice I have received. Currently have a deposit down and was due to collect this Monday but that won't happen now.

I've heard everything from walk away immediately, to the rattle on start up is normal on these cars and doesn't cause a big issue if it only lasts for 1 second or so on cold start, more an irritation. Also heard changing to 10w60 oil and driving the car more frequently may be a fix!

This is part of the cold start video the dealer finally sent me, could someone let me know if this might be a variator, or even something else entirely? I know it can't be diagnosed online but a hint in the right direction would be great!

Thank you all in advance,

Jason

That sounds like a variator rattle...I wouldn't buy any car that makes any odd engine noises...Not worth the risk...Jason

I can't really tell as as the video is from the rear of the car and he is asking about the engine....One from the engine bay would be better...Jason

As other's have said, that sounds like one of the valves of the mufflers rattling. I have a similar loud rattle on cold starts. For me, it lasts >10 seconds until the system builds enough vacuum to fully close the valves. A bit embarrassing for me in parking garages, but I live with it for now, since it doesn't do it during driving.

I had a rattle in both mufflers, but had 1 replaced. New replacement muffler's are like $2k-ish a piece.

Doubtful that a change in oil viscosity will eliminate the rattle from exhaust.

What do the service records say? Can or does Maserati have these records??? Jason, how much is a variator repair cost? if you get a deal where you feel you have that $$$ left to deal with the potential, buy it!! How long has it sat outside? Check undercarriage for rust!!!

Sounded very MINOR to these old ears. Interior looks pretty mint!!

I really don't know about this one...The OP started off talking about the variators etc. and then posted a video of the back of the car?? It seems to me that if the noise is from the engine or the exhaust it would be readily apparent.. Plus the steering wheel is on the wrong side.. ;) Jason

That noise is 100% the muffler valves closing once they have vacuum. It's designed to start with open for the epic noise.

With just the limited knowledge from a short video from the back of the car, I’d bet on muffler rattle. Sounds like mine. The vacuum builds and the mufflers get quieter in about 4 seconds on mine. A video from the engine bay on a cold start would be much better.

Like many others ..it sounds like the exhaust valve or possibly sheilds .. highly consider not using a thicker oil especially if not called for in your climate .. masking a noise is never a good thing ... Even though it definitely doesn't sound like a engine noise ..

Maybe so more videos closer to under truck and in engine bay

Actually I just listened to it again. The initial rumble sounds normal, but once the mufflers get quieter there is another rattling sound that doesn’t sound normal.

I have no rattles that stand out as unusual ( to my ears anyway ..) on start ups , and initial idle , but when the car is fully warm and I happen to be driving adjacent to a wall, whether in a tunnel or a highway concrete divider , or even close enough to another car next to me and I accelerate just moderately stepping on the gas I always hear a metallic rattle of sorts . No idea what that is and if it’s normal or not , and I’m not too concerned but curious what it may be .

Do you have the dual-mode exhaust set in non-sport mode? I have the controllable (by remote) dual-mode exhaust that defaults to sport mode. If I put it in the quieter (non-sport) mode, I can hear a slight metallic rattle from the valves that open/close the exhaust.

Nope, the car is pure stock, and although I think that rattle is there in both in regular and in sport mode, now I’m not 100% sure, so I’ll have to test that next time ..
