I have a 2006 GS LE with the Auditorium 200 sound system (no nav).

I think it goes without saying that the becker head unit is a POS and needs to be replaced ASAP. Maybe even with a Pioneer nav system or a fancy car PC.

Questions:

Is the amp in the headunit, or separate. if separate where is it? If its separate I might just want to keep the factory amp and speakers and replace the head. any possible problems with that?

Oh is the changer compatible with anything other then the becker head? I hate to have to toss the changer, but I may have to.

any other tricky bits I should know about?

Me too.

My beliefs from some research: 1) Amp is separate, I hope using standard ISO connectors to headend. 2) Changer is Becker-compatible only.

I bought a 2GB MMC card and loaded it with MP3's (sounds fine in a Spyder), so I won't miss the CD changer.

I recommend Alpine. been doing this for many years, and always something new comes out that is supposed to be the latest and greatest, but it is always flawed. Alpine makes some of the best equipment. The only thing the alpine lacks, is pretty little screens. they are way to simple.

Also in your vehicle I would look into the VHUB Pro from alpine, and if waiting a month or so won't kill you, they have a new screen coming out that has built in bluetooth, and some other stuff to polish it off.

Besides the Alpine navigation is probably the best in the world, and it gives you voice controls over the audio system also, such as source, track, yada yada yada

hope that helps you out. Just don't skimp on the install. i see more screwed up installs in a $100k vehicles everyday... ranging from some pro shop screwing an amp to the spare tire...to adding a sub and trying to splice a coaxial wire into a fiber optic... (no lie)
